It is with profound sadness that we learn of the passing of Amadou Bagayoko. Alongside his wife, Mariam Doumbia, the Malian duo were pioneering in their sound and spirit. There would be no Because Music without Amadou Bagayoko and we will miss him immensely. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mariam and his family at this difficult time.

C’est avec une immense tristesse et le cœur lourd que nous avons appris la disparition d’Amadou Bagayoko, membre du duo emblématique malien Amadou & Mariam.
Il était l’un des plus grands guitaristes africains de sa génération, perpétuant une musique africaine ouverte qui mêle blues malien et inspirations du monde.
Depuis la sortie de « Dimanche à Bamako » (né de leur rencontre avec Manu Chao), le tout premier album qui actera la naissance de Because Music en 2005 il y a 20 ans, Amadou a marqué les esprits et accompagné plusieurs générations d’amoureux de la musique à travers le monde. Amadou & Mariam font partie intégrante de nos vies depuis plus de 20 ans et font partie de la famille. Ils ont rapidement rencontré un immense succès, couronnés par plusieurs Victoires de la Musique et une nomination aux prestigieux Grammy Awards, les récompenses ont déferlé sur le couple : disques d’or puis de platine… Ils sont embarqués sur la scène internationale et multiplient les collaborations prestigieuses (Damon Albarn, Santigold, TV On The Radio ou Akon…) et les premières parties (U2, Coldplay…). Ils inaugurent les ouvertures des Coupes du Monde de football en Allemagne (2006) et en Afrique du Sud (2010) et s’emparent des scènes de fameux festivals américains comme Coachella et Lollapalooza...Ils rencontrent également Barack Obama le jour de la remise de son prix Nobel de la paix à Oslo en 2009 et participaient à la cérémonie des Jeux Olympiques de Paris l’année dernière.
Engagés dans plusieurs projets humanitaires, Amadou & Mariam ont toujours fait passer des messages de paix et d’amour à travers leur musique, affirmant avec conviction : “Nous chanterons la paix et l’amour jusqu’à notre dernier souffle.”
En ce moment douloureux, nous pensons très fort à Mariam, à sa famille, ainsi qu'à tous ceux qui ont eu la chance de côtoyer Amadou, de près ou de loin. Sa disparition laisse un vide immense dans nos cœurs.

The Because Music label was launched in Paris in 2004 and achieved global success with “Dimanche à Bamako”, an album by Amadou & Mariam. The catalogue expanded with Keziah Jones, Manu Chao and Les Rita Mitsouko, followed by the signing of Charlotte Gainsbourg. Because also signed a partnership with the Parisian electronic music label Ed Banger (Justice, Sebastian, Breakbot and Myd).
In 2005, Because Group opened a branch in London and signed international artists such as Metronomy and Django Django. This international position was reinforced with hits by Diplo and Major Lazer, as well as the breakthrough success of Christine and the Queens.
This year, the label is pursuing its strategy, signing promising artists (Shygirl, Logic1000, Alewya, Crystal Murray, Timothée Joly and Joysad). Because is strengthening its foothold in hip-hop music with the new Booba-sponsored label La Piraterie Music, the Art de Rue project in 2020, and the signing of belgian rapper Shay in April 2021.
