March 2025 Update
Alpha is now 75 members strong 🎉
But beyond the count, what truly excites me is the engagement & enthusiasm we’ve seen in just three weeks since launching this community
1️⃣ 18 companies have been put forth for deep-dive discussions by 12 unique members
These cover diverse sectors like pharma, infra, transformers, chemicals, NBFC, textiles and most recently, a turnaround play in the cables & wire segment. As new members settle in, I’m confident more will step up, contributing ideas and expanding our collective wisdom
⭐ In April, we’re introducing a mastermind structure – where members proposing a company will present their investment thesis over a 30-minute video call. This will encourage better preparation and allow for interactive Q&A sessions
2️⃣ In March, we hosted 3 insightful video calls. This included sessions on:
▸ How to Estimate Future EPS of a Company
▸ Industry Analysis : Transformers
▸ New Member Onboarding Call
3️⃣ Others:
▸ Added: Resources section covering useful reports & tools
▸ Added: DM & Chats section for members to connect 1-on-1 with others for deeper discussions/side-bars
▸ Misses: Couldn’t update newsletter follow-ups due to time constraints, will bring this upto speed in April
▸ Member Feedback: Invite experts to join Alpha & conduct sessions
👉 Overall, I’m incredibly happy with Alpha’s evolution so far. Unlike social media, where information is scattered, Alpha fosters curated, well-thought-out discussions among serious investors
It’s still early days, but we’ll continue refining & improving Alpha to make it a valuable, engaging and inviting space for investment research and discovery

My newsletter's Q3 performance review is out
Link: shankarnath.substack.com/p/newsletter-performance-…
Understandably, this was a challenging quarter for me as I work exclusively on small & microcap stocks. Much like others, I found it painful to open my trading account because almost everyday -- "red" was the new red
However this exercise where I reviewed all 12 featured companies turned out to be a valuable one. It helped me:
a) Identify gaps & improvement areas in my research process which we'll now activate
b) Spot companies that have higher potential than others & can form a part of my long-term portfolio
Pls do have a look. And if you have thoughts/feedback, kindly post them in the newsletter's comments section (and not on Youtube)
Happy Investing to you!

I have a job opening 👨🏻💻
I’m making it sound like we’re a big company but currently, it's just me & Priyam (my researcher). And now we're looking to add a third member to our setup
Role: Researcher (Full-Time)
Here’s the perfect match:
a) No quarter, no half, this is a full-time position
b) Not remote. It’s geo-fenced for people residing in West/Central/North Delhi — max. 30 mins of travel time from your home to Pitampura, Moti Nagar, Punjabi Bagh & whereabouts
c) 25 years of age or lower (must be over 18 though)
d) No more than 2 years of experience; freshers are welcome incl. B. Com., B.A (Eco), B. Phil, B. Sc., MBBS, CA Inter, CFA Level 1 etc. (the degree doesn't matter, equity research is a learnable skill)
e) A voracious reader (we tirelessly read reports & transcripts for 5 hours every day; if you haven’t read that much at a stretch, please try it for a week before applying. You’ll know how excruciatingly difficult it is)
I understand these draconian requirements will disqualify 99% of you reading this message. But if you know someone who further knows someone (meri chachi ke bhai ke best friend ki beti), then please forward this message to them
The compensation will be more than satisfactory. Ofcourse the bigger upside is the opportunity for you to experience growing a one-man outfit (now two, soon three) into a viable, long-term business
Very important:
▸ While equity research is learnable, not everything can be taught. Hardwork, ethics, humility & responsibility are important character traits we seek in our colleague -- afterall, the research we do impacts the gains & losses of others
▸ Additionally, don't treat this position as a "learning" assignment. You might be young but this role requires you to contribute independently, take full ownership of your work & pays a salary (not stipend)
If you’re genuinely keen to work with us & grow this business, please complete the below form in it’s entirety
Form: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfQMXeLErhTudMKXk…
If you have any questions or doubts for me/Priyam, please drop us a detailed note at hello@beginnersbuck.com and we'll get back to you
Wishing you the best,
Shankar

An 18-minute podcast. Seriously?
Yes! That’s all it took for Navdha Khera from @PowerUpMoney to uncover everything — my salary over the years, income from Youtube, portfolio value, investing strategy, mutual fund setup and she even threw in some Reddit-style rapid-fire questions
Don’t miss this power-packed conversation:

PS: Note to self — My face is so bloated. Time to shed a few kilograms and get fit

Located on the banks of the Narmada River, the ancient city of Mahishmati holds immense historical and cultural significance.
Celebrated in the Indian epics Mahabharata and Ramayana, it served as the capital for several prominent kingdoms, including the Avanti, Anupa, Kalachuris, and Paramaras.
Mahishmati was a vibrant hub of diverse cultures & religions and was renowned for its architectural grandeur. Its legacy was further immortalized by S. S. Rajamouli’s epic Baahubali film series.
Today, I am thrilled to contribute to this great city’s enduring legacy by introducing you to a Baahubali podcast!
This single episode of 3 hours, 20 mins aims to capture many of my learnings through the years

In response to yesterday's question ( shankarnath.substack.com/p/kilburn-engineering/com… ), I revealed some parts of how the newsletter is performing
In brief:
1. Since August 2024, I've featured 10 investment stories -- 3 in Aug, 3 in Sep, 1 in Oct, 1 in Nov & 2 in Dec
2. My net investments comes to ₹21.7 lakhs
3. The portfolio is currently at ₹25.2 lakhs
Ergo, absolute return = 16%
XIRR = 73%
73% is super decent! I'm certain this number will come down over time but pleasantly, this outperformance happened when the markets have been rather sideways
Infact when I mapped these entry & exit dates to the Nifty Smallcap 250 PRI, the resulting performance was "minus 3%" !
I'm aur bhi proud (yes! you can say, much of this post has been written by my ego) and it's surely a great way to end my 2024
If you aren't a reader yet, please consider subscribing to my free newsletter. I don't post every day, I post only when a good opportunity shows up
Here are those 10 investing stories in reverse chronological order:
a) Kilburn Engineering : shankarnath.substack.com/p/kilburn-engineering
b) Deep Industries : shankarnath.substack.com/p/deep-industries
c) UGRO Capital : shankarnath.substack.com/p/ugro-capital
d) Garware Hi-Tech Films : shankarnath.substack.com/p/garware-hi-tech-films
e) Ceigall India : shankarnath.substack.com/p/ceigall-india
f) Raymond Lifestyle : shankarnath.substack.com/p/raymond-lifestyle
g) Sky Gold : shankarnath.substack.com/p/skygold
h) Zaggle Prepaid : shankarnath.substack.com/p/zaggleprepaid
i) BLS International : shankarnath.substack.com/p/bls-international
j) SAMHI Hotels : shankarnath.substack.com/p/hidden-profit-of-236-cr…

Bade bade deshon mein aisi choti-choti baatein hoti rehti hain
1. Within 3 hours of posting edition 17 of my newsletter, the platform -- Substack -- crashed
No, I didn't cause it although I'm grateful some 10,000 people opened that email in those first three hours
While the outage was resolved in 30-40 minutes, if you haven't read the latest investing story on Deep Industries -- pls do access the link below.
I'm sure you'll find it useful, maybe even profitable
Link: shankarnath.substack.com/p/deep-industries
2. A few weeks back, I pulled out a video on unlisted shares. Reason: the video had very low viewcount which many of you explained in a follow-up community post
That video was a 10-point checklist -- areas one should be aware of & careful of when investing in unlisted shares.
Now, SEBI too has come up with note cautioning investors to be vary of un-registered web applications / electronic platforms
While the video is sponsored by Incred Money, they've been very supportive of me publishing this video now
And since a few of you (existing investors like me or prospective investors) might have doubts, I've requested the Incred Money team to help us out with all our queries -- which can be posted in the comments section
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BKM_...
Have a great Sunday!
PS: No videos for the next 2-3 weeks. I'm taking some time off to recalibrate my strategy in 2025 incl. videos, newsletter, community, RA license, smallcase etc.

A decline in our health impacts more than just our well-being 🤒
It can also hurt our investments, especially if you've bought stocks in health insurance companies 🔻
I was recently reviewing the earnings call transcripts of Star Health, one key concern stood out: the rising number of claims
And not just in Q2 of FY25 but almost every quarter in the past 2 years
From seasonal illnesses like fever & respiratory ailments, to growing insurance awareness, a high share of group business and persistent medical inflation — health insurance companies are navigating significant challenges
I'll keep sharing updates on this through my newsletter and paid community (launching in 3-4 months)
For now, here's something that could be incredibly valuable to you --- Ditto Insurance is hosting a FREE webinar on Health Insurance this Wednesday (11th December) from 7 PM to 8 PM
