Hey everyone! Iβm always looking for ways to improve my walking videos and make them more enjoyable for you. Iβve been experimenting with adding historical facts, old photos, and prints of Edinburgh during the walks. Do you prefer this style, or do you enjoy a more uninterrupted, pure walking experience? If you have seen my most recent video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhE8z...) you will have heard me puzzling about this sculpture in Canongate Kirk. Well, I found out about it today and thought I would share it here:
It's called The Last Chimera and is by Josefina de Vasconcellos (b.1904 - d.2005). She completed this work in 1950 and it was shown at the Festival of Britain in London in 1951.
This sculpture shows a chimera β a creature from Greek mythology combining a lion, a goat and a snake β with a bird and its chicks between its front paws and a boy stabbing it in the neck. It symbolises Christ (the boy) protecting the church (the bird and its chicks) against ignorance and superstition (the chimera).
So now we know!
