The first idea of Universe came to me right when waking up, which almost never happens. I went into my studio immediately and started creating feverishly. There was almost no friction or forcing of anything, as if I was transcribing the music from somewhere else rather than making it from scratch. The process felt odd because I didn't have much control over how things unfolded, but at the same time I was ok with it. I really loved what I got down and added bits here and there over the next several months. However, something special was missing and it was obvious! The Universe needed @ida_hawk 's voice, energy, and magic. She's truly a wizard with melodies and vibe...So we organized a session in a little rental studio in LA, I flew down, we got into a great flow in the studio, and then had ice cream and Thai food ha!
Once every few years there is a track that breaks fresh creative ground and starts a new phase in my artistry. When I really began integrating Jessie's vocals in the session, I knew Universe was that type of song for me. More recently, I caught up with Jessie on the phone to talk life and the release, and we came up with a theory that starting a new song is like starting a hike down a new path. Or walking in a city you've never been. You're so receptive and open to the experience. There's a story to be lived. There's a Universe to explore, and we hope you enjoy this one as much as we do.
