Devastated at the passing of David Crosby.
Crosby, Stills and Nash has been an integral part of my life, making me who I am today. When I first began collecting vinyl, I was limited to what I could find in this regional town and had to look elsewhere. Crosby, Stills & Nash' self-titled debut was the first album I ever bought online. I can still vividly recall eagerly driving home from the post office with that record, full of excitement for what was to come. The smell, the texture of the sleeve, the sounds that swarmed my brain and dosed me heavily with oxytocin. In a state of euphoria, I went for a walk through nature and had one of the most self-fulfilling, meaningful moments of my life. It was like all the stars had aligned and everything made sense. Each time I seek my happy place, I take a walk in nature and listen to those songs and I'm there again. Each track has a different sentimental, nostalgic significance: "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" is bliss, innocence and simplicity; "Marrakesh Express" is pot and LSD, exploring the brand-new colours in the mind; "Guinnevere" is happily stumbling through a frozen 17th century night, no destination required; "You Don't Have to Cry" is smiling for the unexpected acceptance of every lover left behind; "Pre-Road Downs" is driving to a shitty, dead-end job and feeling great; "Wooden Ships" is Jefferson Airplane and the harmonious co-existence of humankind; "Lady of the Island" is two bodies sharing warmth, eyes soft and light with bold contentment; "Helplessly Hoping" is the search for peace and understanding after the news of a friend's father ODing; "Long Time Gone" is Woodstock; "49 Bye-Byes" is not a goodbye at all. It's a hello. It's rebirth. It's opening your aged eyes for the first time. It's a subtle adrenaline rush - it's asking oneself, "What's next?"
David Crosby now knows what is next.
