On February 18, 1930, at a time when the most advanced technology on Earth was radio, a great American astronomer and scientist named Clyde Tombaugh photographed an object more than three billion miles away. It was different from all the other points of light he could see on that clear night.
It was moving.
Clyde Tombaugh had become the only American to discover a planet in our solar system. It was called Pluto. Eighty-five years later, a spacecraft called New Horizons captured stunning images of Earth's most distant sister world: a fitting tribute to one of the mighty pioneering spirits in the study of space.
