Søren Kierkegaard lived from 1813-1855 in Denmark. Christianity was his main interest. Christian Psychology was his area of expertise. Some philosophers call him and existentialist. He wrote about Friedrich Hegel (science), Johann Goethe (arts), and Johann Fichte (Ego), and inspired both Dostoyevsky and Nietzsche. Kierkegaard thought that Christianity teaches first that God exists and then works up to the idea that Jesus the Christ is the single individual who was God. Kierkegaard laid stress on the positive passions (emotions) of faith, patience, gratitude, thanksgiving, hope and love. But again he begins with self-control as a method of teaching Christianity. He was against the scientific study of the world of the Holy Spirit. He dealt with concepts such as despair, anxiety, the inner being, or inner self and protecting the soul from becoming too much a part of the word. Hegel wanted to start with the ethical life - a life of rules. Goethe wanted to start with aesthetics.
