I recently had a chat with Danny Bate on his podcast "A Language I Love Is...". The language I chose is Old English (naturally). Great interviewer that he is, Danny steered us beyond the basics into some interesting, less usual OE-related topics. I also talked a little bit about my linguist origin story. Check it out here:

More "behind the scenes" Ōsweald Bera content over on Substack: this time I wrote about all the pedagogical concerns that went into constructing the story... in other words, why Ōsweald had to be a bear and why he had to leave his forest

For anyone interested in a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of Ōsweald Bera (upcoming old English textbook/reader), I've written up some thoughts over on Substack:

It's been a busy time over the past few months, between a big move and a lot of work finalizing the text for my Old English textbook (more on that in the months to come). But I have something for you today!

It's not a video this time though – it's an article that gives you the background you need to understand Classical Chinese poetry: from how the language sounded when the poetry was written, how to read poetry today, how rhyme and metre works, and the ingenious structural devices that bind poems together.

You can read "Classical Chinese Poetry: A guide for the curious" here: colingorrie.substack.com/p/classical-chinese-poetr…

Hello, friends! Due to technical difficulties in my current location, there won't be any stream next week. Instead, we'll be hosting a community event on our Discord at the same time (Tuesday Dec 13, 2–4pm Eastern). The topic: planning a new video series "Teach Yourself Pkwak". In other words, we'll be designing the curriculum for a short video course on our conlang Pkwak. Join us to see behind the scenes and to weigh in on how we should teach a conlang.

Voting on the Biiraiverse fanfiction contest commences now! Participants have written 1000-word short stories set in the world we've been building together on the channel. We have four entries for you to choose from. The story with the most votes by November 1 at midnight (Eastern time) will be canonized into the Biiraiverse lore and recorded for upload on the channel with some dramatic narration by yours truly.

Check out all the amazing work the community has done and cast your vote below for which story you'd like to be canonized!

New profile pic! I think it captures the particular mix of "professorial" and "goofy" that makes this channel what it is.

Don't I look like I'm about to make a joke like "Did you hear the one about the linguist who studied ambiguity? She liked it more than most people." ...get it?
