LYSOSOME
Word Study Lyso = Splitting
Soma =Body

Definition: These are the membranous organelles of eukaryotic cells that contain
digestive enzymes called hydrolases.

Discovery:
Lysosomes were for the first time isolated by De Duve in 1949.

Chemical Composition:
Chemically the Lysosome contain single membrane that
encloses variety of enzymes. That help in digestion.

Formation:
RER contain ribosomes that prepare the digestive enzymes. These
enzymes are processed by ER and budded of as Primary Lysosomes.
Structure: Lysosomes are small rounded sac-like structure

Functions:
Lysosome functions can be arranged into three aspects.
1)Digestion of food or other materials by phagocytosis and pinocytosis.
2)Digestion of part of cells by Autophagy.
3)Break down of extra cellular material by release of enzymes into
surrounding medium.

Malfunctioning: Malfunctioning mean bad or abnormal functioning several diseases
have been found due to accumulation of different substances like glycogen,
lipids etc. These are called the storage diseases due to malfunctioning of
Lysosome enzymes.
Example:
1)Glycogenosis Type II: In this disease, the Liver and muscles appear
filled with glycogen with membrane bounded organelles. The enzyme for conversion
of glucose to glycogen is absent.

2)Tay-Sach's Disease):
This disease is involved in the catabolism of lipids. If these lipid accumulates in brain cells,
they can cause mental retardation. 📚📚📚📚🧫🧫🧫🧫
