When visiting Peru, one of the hurdles you're likely to experience is money, payment and tipping. With the biggest headache for tourists being the ATM machines.
ATMs in Peru can have unreasonably high fees and low withdrawal limits. Plus, ATMs in Peru are a magnet for thieves and scammers (watch out for card skimming devices).
Now, it's not all doom and gloom. And you needn't carry large amounts of cash and worry about converting all that cash while on holiday.
The easiest and safest way that I've found to get cash and pay for things in Peru, is using a travel debit card combined with a cash transfer service.
Which brands and companies you use is up to you. And you should choose one based on your own personal needs.
I use a WISE digital debit card through Apple Pay combined with cash acquired through Western Union. Basically, I pay for almost everything with tap and go, using my phone. And I do this to avoid card skimming, scanning and card cloning.
I also have cash acquired from Western Union for use in places where tap and go isn't available. And I get my cash through Western Union instead of an ATM, because they have much higher transaction limits (more than I'll ever need). And because they're often providing better exchange rates and are safer to use.

Are you looking for a quick, easy and cheap way to spend more than 90 days in Peru? Consider applying for this visa. It costs $143 USD for a year and is extendable.

I read on Google that I can extend my Peruvian tourist visa from 90 days granted on arrival, to 180 days in a 360 day period. But it's not true.
Online through the Migraciones portal, only citizens of Bolivia, Colombia and Ecuador can extend online. And in person, it doesn't work either.
Because the Peruvian government hasn't yet published the required rules for visa extensions!
So, if you're planning to extend your tourist visa in Peru, based on what you read on a website recommended by a search engine (*sigh* Google), like I did, you're in for a rude shock. Because it won't work!
Instead, you will need to use a local lawyer to put you on another visa and navigate all the rules and regulations. Or, you'll need to leave within the timeframe that you're granted on entry into Peru.
Note: There is a 'digital nomad' visa in Peru. But, the same law that changed the visa extension rules, created the 'Digital Nomad' visa. And they haven't finalized or published the requirements - 8 months later - so you can't apply for the digital nomad visa either!
Peru 🤷♂️🤦

I'm Kieran Proctor, an Australian travel blogger. I'm traveling around the world making videos with my friends. My main areas of focus are Argentina, Colombia, Cuba and Peru. Plus the rest of Latin America.
I just bought myself an apartment in Lima Peru, from which I can continue my travels around South America and the Caribbean. Once the apartment is finalized in July 2024, I'll make a video detailing the process and give you a tour. I'll then be going fishing in the Amazon to celebrate!
