Version 1.12 brings updated support for shoe settings.
While it's still recommended to mount controller on the foot - for best shooting experience - you can now mount controller wherever you want and adjust the shoe settings.
There is one rule - controller must touch the leg, otherwise it will "think" nobody is holding it, and the tracking will get worse.

On the ankle
You can even hold it in hand.
