THE SOCIAL FABRIC

Handloom is a social enterprise. It takes an entire village to weave a colourful fabric, just as it takes an entire society to weave the rich tapestry of life!
From spinning and arranging the yarn to tying and dyeing as well as warping and wefting, a piece of handwoven cloth, whether it is a saree or other textile material, passes through several minds and hands before it comes alive.
A handwoven fabric is alive, as several souls come together to breathe life into it.
Handloom is not just sustainable in terms of the material used and the process involved, it also has the least impact on the environment in many ways. It is a key component of sustainable fashion that the world needs more than ever now, it is also the vital strand in the ‘make in India’ mission.
More importantly, handloom sustains and empowers thousands of villagers, especially women, keeping them independently employed and helping them stay safe from the expanding net of the big industries!
Handloom sector is the key strand of India’s rural economy that not only plays a crucial role in keeping an ancient legacy alive, but is also at the forefront of the battle against the ruthless onslaught of globalisation and homogeneity.
However, despite renewed interest among some urban elite in the revival of handloom, most of India’s handloom clusters are struggling and dwindling.
As India celebrates the diversity of its handloom traditions ahead of the I-Day, let’s look within and see what little we can do in supporting the handloom weavers of India and strengthening our rural economy.

Gahwah

Coffee in India has spiritual origins - Hajj and Sufi origins to be specific. This aromatic beverage came to India by way of a Sufi saint from Chikmagaluru, now known as Baba Budangiri.
On his way back from the Hajj pilgrimage in Makkah, the saint passed through Yemen, the original home of coffee, and slipped in some precious coffee seeds.

Around 500 years ago, Yemenis had a monopoly over coffee. It was exclusively grown in their fertile highlands. To maintain their monopoly, Yemenis only sold processed coffee to the outside world, but there was one exception.

According to the oral history surrounding Baba Budangiri, some well-wisher in Yemen gifted the saint a small sack of coffee seeds, which travelled to India with his humble belongings, unnoticed by the Yemeni custom officials.
Back home, the saint planted the seeds in his backyard, helping India’s coffee culture take root. Coffee plantation is now a major business not just in Chikmagaluru, but also in Coorg, Hasan and other neighbouring districts.
India is now among the top 10 producers of coffee in the world, with Karnataka leading the charge. Around 70 per cent of India’s coffee is produced in Karnataka, followed by Kerala (23 per cent) and Tamil Nadu (6 per cent). The rest of the India accounts for just one per cent of the country’s total production.

South India’s signature filter coffee culture also owes its origin to this rather unassuming voyage of a Sufi saint, whose impact has been far reaching and continues to hold devotees in trance.
But, despite this rather longish history of coffee in India, the drink has not been part of India’s popular culture, with only a few exceptions.
One of the exceptions is the coffee culture of Barkas, the origins of which is entirely different.
Have you tried the nourishing Gahwah from Barkas? It’s a heady mix of a unique cultural tradition in Hyderabad!
You can enjoy more of it in our upcoming documentary #theoasispeople.
