Coming next month, a project I've been excited to work on for a very long time! 90 years ago last week something bizarre and tragic happened off the US east coast; a luxury liner, the spectacular Morro Castle, caught fire and burned, eventually beaching herself on the Jersey shore in full view of thousands - but the cause of the fire, and the insane turn of events afterwards, will shock you. It's a tale of disaster, intrigue and murder - one of the strangest stories in maritime history. In 'INFERNO: The Burning of the SS Morro Castle' you'll join me in Asbury Park New Jersey where we, along with a surprise special guest, unpick the story and give you front row seats to this fascinating, horrific event.

Hi friends - I need your help!
I meant to make a 600k subscriber special video but then... okay yeah, I admit; I lost track of time. No matter! I thought it would be fun to sit back and review a few of Oceanliner Designs' videos from the past few years and tell you all some of the fun behind the scenes stories of how these videos were made! BUT - which videos?? I'd love to cover about 10 videos form the channel's past - so if you have any requests please post them below! The most popular choices will be added to the list. :)

Do you know about Tirpitz the ship pig?

During World War I, a German ship collided with British cruisers, and among the captured survivors was a little piglet thrown aboard by fleeing Germans.

The British rescued her from her initial fate to be eaten and named her Tirpitz. They made her their ship mascot and awarded her a fake Iron Cross for being the only one who did not abandon the ship. After serving in the Royal Navy for a year, Tirpitz found a new home at an artillery school.

In one of our recent popular videos, we discuss the Monarch of the Seas incident, a fascinating story that's been largely forgotten but one which demonstrated that modern ships are not immune to disaster! What do you think was the biggest contributor to the accident?

Hello all! Do you like ships? Do you like video games? Did you know we are making a ship video game? Today we're premiering the first interior room from the game, the music room from the RMS Empress of Ireland; a gorgeous space our team has spent a lot of time lovingly recreating. Soon you'll be able to walk around this ship and many more as well as a host of historic environments in a deeply immersive historical simulator. I hope you enjoy it! Please head over to our channel ‪@GrandVoyageGame‬ to see what we've been up to :)

Have you ever heard of the famous English Pointer, Judy?

She served on the HMS Grasshopper when it was sunk by Japanese bombers in 1941. At first Judy assisted the shipwrecked crew on a deserted island by finding water. The crew members who were taken as prisoners managed to keep Judy with them by smuggling her into a Japanese POW camp and then eventually convincing the commandant to allow registering her as a prisoner.

She survived the war but only narrowly; she was aboard a prisoner transport when it was hit by an English submarine who had no idea it was carrying POWs. Judy was pushed out of a porthole and into there water; here she saved several people from drowning by pushing flotsam and other items to them.

Judy was known to protect her comrades from guards and found food to bring them. For her bravery, she was awarded the Maria Dickin Medal in 1945, a medal specifically struck for animals for conspicuous acts of bravery - essentially the Victoria Cross for dogs, cats, birds, horses and everything in between.

Bravo Zulu, Judy!

Look what I saw! This was so surreal, the first time I ever saw a historic ship that I made a video about for the channel. Back in 2022 the first ever animated Oceanliner Designs video featured the SS United States (who remembers that one with the fun 2D animations!) - now two years later I finally got to visit her and see the legend in person. The SS US’ future is up in the air at the moment so I really hope an answer can be found soon. We just can’t let this amazing history and engineering brilliance be lost.
