Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman, commonly known as C. V. Raman, was a renowned Indian physicist born on November 7, 1888, in Tiruchirapalli, Madras Presidency, British India (now Tamil Nadu, India). He passed away on November 21, 1970, in Bangalore, Mysore, India1.

Raman is celebrated for his groundbreaking work in the field of light scattering, known as the Raman Effect. This discovery was made using a spectrograph he developed, which revealed that when light traverses a transparent material, the deflected light changes its wavelength and frequency1. For this significant contribution to physics, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930, becoming the first Asian to win a Nobel Prize in any branch of science1.

His early education was marked by exceptional achievements, completing secondary education at a very young age and graduating with honors in physics from the University of Madras at just 16. Raman’s career spanned various prestigious institutions, including the Indian Finance Department, Rajabazar Science College (University of Calcutta), Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, Indian Institute of Science, and the Raman Research Institute1.

Raman was also a Fellow of the Royal Society and received numerous other awards and honors, including the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, in 19541. His legacy continues to inspire scientists and researchers around the world.
