As Papua New Guinea prepares to celebrate 50 years of independence in 2025, we reflect on the many individuals who have contributed to the country's growth, both in significant and modest ways.

In this personal project, I am dedicating my own time and resources to document the stories of those who witnessed Papua New Guinea's journey to independence in 1975 and those who experienced the times before. Join me as we explore their insights and perspectives on the nation's progress over the past 50 years.

In this exclusive interview, we delve into the captivating life story of Ben Woo, a notable figure among the Papua New Guinea-Chinese community in Lae. Ben's narrative begins with his parents' - father Ping Chui Woo and mother Jin Yee Wan - migration from the devastated town of Rabaul to Lae in the aftermath of World War II, seeking a fresh start. Ben, a true 'Mangi Lae,' has spent his entire life in Lae, choosing to stay even when opportunities abroad beckoned. H was born in Lae on August 4, 1960, did his primary schooling at Bulae Primary School in Lae from Grade 1 to Grade 6, and then did Grade 7 to 12 at St Peter's Lutheran College in Brisbane.

Ben Woo stands out not just for his personal history but also for his significant contributions to the local community and economy. As the owner of the renowned PC & JY Woo Ltd stores in Lae and Mt Hagen, and the iconic Wan Jin Wah Store on 7th Street, Ben's entrepreneurial spirit has left a lasting mark on the city. Yet, it's his role outside the business world that truly embodies his impact. A devoted layman in the Resurrection Lutheran Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of PNG, Ben's dedication to faith and community service has been a beacon of hope and unity in Lae.

Throughout this interview, Ben shares insights into his family's decision to remain in Papua New Guinea post-independence in 1975, the hurdles they've faced over the past five decades, and his optimistic vision for the future of both the country and its religious community. Join us as Ben Woo recounts the trials, triumphs, and enduring spirit of the Papua New Guinea-Chinese community in Lae, through his eyes.

Celebrating Papua New Guinea's Rich History Ahead of 50 Years of Independence

As Papua New Guinea prepares to celebrate 50 years of independence in 2025, it is disheartening to realise that many people are unaware of the country's rich history. One remarkable figure in PNG's history is Queen Emma, a beautiful Samoan/American woman who defied convention to establish a commercial empire in 19th Century New Guinea, based in East New Britain.

Last week, I discovered a classic book by R.W. Robson, the founder of Pacific Islands Monthly, on sale at Theodist in Port Moresby for only K5. This book offers a fascinating insight into PNG's captivating past.

🌟 Exceptional Service at Kina Bank! 🌟

My daughter urgently needed a Visa card. She applied online last Friday night at Kina Bank and picked it up last Saturday morning at the Vision City branch (Kina Bank even operates on Saturdays). This is what I call international standard service! πŸš€ So fast compared to Bank South Pacific, where you have to wait for weeks, even months!β³πŸ’³

PS: Papua New Guinea πŸ‡΅πŸ‡¬ would really start moving if people do things with more urgency and a sense of service!
