Have you heard of the Filles du Roi, young women sent from France to marry settlers and help grow the population? In the mid-1600s, New France was barely hanging on. The population was small, the economy was weak, and everything depended on the fur trade.

Enter Jean Talon, a sharp-minded guy with big ideas. Sent by King Louis XIV in 1665, Talon saw the colony’s potential and went to work immediately.

One of his first big moves was bringing over the Filles du Roi, or "King’s Daughters," young women sent from France to marry settlers and help grow the population. Talon also offered land and financial perks to attract more immigrants. With more people around, he knew they needed more than just fur to survive. So, he pushed for new farming techniques and crops like wheat and flax. He also kicked off industries like shipbuilding and brewing, even setting up North America’s first brewery!

Talon didn’t stop there. He improved roads, built bridges, and made sure the settlers had what they needed. His hands-on approach won him the love and respect of the people. By the time he left in 1672, New France was on its way to becoming a strong, self-sufficient colony.

Today, places like Montreal’s Jean-Talon Market remind us of his incredible work and lasting legacy. Talon’s story shows how one person’s vision and effort can change everything.
