Saxophonist Anton Tkachev, based in Donetsk, Ukraine, manages to keep up and sound up-to-date. In the situation where many of his peers try to copy the past decades' masters, Anton's voice is his own. Of course one can hear his influences: John Coltrane, Michael Brecker, Wayne Shorter. But this is no surprise: the entire jazz movement is growing on itself, and those past masters creatively digested the achievements of their respective forerunners. Creatively is the keyword. This ensemble from Donetsk tries to speak from themselves rather than imitate. Ensemble is another keyword: one can hear the musician interact, which proves that this is a tight working band, not a group of session musicians. The interaction between saxophonist Tkachev and pianist Victor Didyk is especially satisfying.
