Love seeing maps/pmvs/animatics/ whatever for fandoms that aren't warrior cats like. 99% of the time it's things that I'm not familiar with but I'll watch them just bc I like seeing variety in the animation comunity lol.
Like as talented as wc fandom is it does get a bit tiring seeing the 50th ashfur pmv lmao.
Not that there can't be original wc content but. Idk shout out to people making content of obscure fandoms or their ocs that like 4 people will see. I love u β€οΈ

anyway I keep seeing this take going around in comments and such whenever discussion of maps comes up wich is like. criticizing map hosts for having talented animators in their maps I guess??
And like. on one hand I get the frustration of not being accepted into a map! I do! 100%! it sucks when you get denied from a project you really care about, and it's happened to me a lot too.
BUT!
I just don't think this is a valid criticism lmao. Like it really seems like the people making these arguments feel like they are owed a spot in the next big popular map and. I'm sorry but you're just not!
Like you're not being denied a job opportunity or anything, these are free projects hosted by regular people in their free time and if a host wants to pick more experienced animators over beginners it's. not a big deal???
I mean I'm not sure what you expect from hosts of bigger maps when a good animator applies to their project, just deny them in favor of some random person? And I'm saying bigger maps specifically because this criticism is directed pretty much entirely at those. Like there's plenty of smaller maps that dont get filled bc everyone is focused on being in the next Big Thingβ’, and those most likely would accept you.
And it's funny bc i keep seeing stuff like "wow the community is too focused on on likes and subscribers these days smh" which ok on a surface level I agree with but like. girl why do you want to get into this map specifically? is it bc its hosted by a big animator? I think it is.
And again I get it, it feels exciting to participate in a bigger project and have your work seen by thousands of people! (plus its way more likely that these maps get finished which is always nice) but its a bit hypocritical to accuse map hosts of caring too much about subscribers when we're all doing that.
Another critcism is that there tends to be a lot of the same animators across maps which like. yeah? ofc a host is more likely to pick someone if they've already been in one of their maps and know they're reliable.
Also the "older maps weren't like this" point is not really true either? Like I remember also seeing the same bunch of people in every big map in ye olden days too. And yeah they used to feel less polished and more varied but that's simply bc there just were less experienced animators back then (and the more "famous" ones still got picked first lol)
Anyway gonna try to end on a positive note to not make this too much of a rant :)
I guess my response to these criticisms is yes, I get it, but also map hosts dont owe you anything and try not to get too hung up about it. I guarantee you there are tons of smaller and/or beginner friendly maps for you to join. Yes it may be harder to find somethig that interests you but I'm sure there's a lot of great ideas out there that don't get attention so just look a bit harder! or dont! Honestly if you find that maps are just more stressful for you than fun, or you just don't feel like anything interests you right now nobody's forcing you to participate in them lmao. Focus on your own projects or pick up a new hobby or host your own map if you're feeling braveπ³

I have mixed feelings about anything/fandom maps bc most of the time they feel really disjointed (esp anything maps) and also like. The little attention they get usually isn't really worth the effort (this sounds selfish lmao but idk it feels a bit pointless to participate in a project that like 300 people will see esp if you're a slow artist like me rip)
But also,,,I need to make short animations of my poor little meow meows,,,the urge to show everyone blorbo from my shows,,,,

Been thinking about hosting a medieval-style map (like song of the witches and queen of argyll) but for multifandom instead π I don't know any songs that would fit tho so if anyone knows any medieval style songs with lyrics pls give me (excluding bardcore covers bc as much as I love them they're a bit too meme-y lol)
