Hey Everyone! I’m making a video about public toilets in Japan and I’m wondering how they compare to other places around the world. Can you share what public toilets are like in your country? Some video footage (like 15-60 seconds) or some photos (3-5) would be great. Let me know what makes them good, bad, and what could be improved. You can share imagery at www.dropbox.com/request/MOdmz1VVGgBFULcUq8K7 Thanks so much! - Greg

p.s. I read that Paris has some great free public toilets that self-clean. Is there anyone that lives there that could share their experiences?

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, Happy Holidays, č‰Æć„ćŠå¹“ć‚’ļ¼

My first Christmas living in Japan with my family was a bit of a culture shock. I found out that the kids' last day of school was going to be on December 25th, where they'd go to school for a half day. For Japan, Christmas is more of a romantic holiday than anything, and it's a regular work day just like any other (so more similar to Valentine's Day than anything else).

The big holiday in Japan is centered around New Year's Day, with New Year's Eve being similar to Christmas Eve, and New Year's Day being like Christmas Day (if you have to compare it to holidays in Canada).

I had always wanted to make a video about what New Year's in Japan was like, but of course we were busy spending that time with family, so I never did it for a decade. But 2 years ago I meticulously filmed all the winter holiday events (even Christmas) in Japan and released the video last year.

There are so many interesting traditions: lots of food, the first temple/shrine visit, lotteries, letter giving, end of year cleaning, and the list goes on. I found it quite fascinating and I hope you do too.

All the best everyone! - Greg watch video on watch page

UPDATES! First off, I released a video on the X channel that provides an update to the "Revitalizing a Green Tea Town" story I did in 2022 https://youtu.be/obemuIvPHnM?si=UxMUf...

I don't know if I'll continue cross-posting like this, but the X channel is my second channel and I post less polished videos over there youtube.com/@LifeWhereImFromX I'll be continuing to post there about every couple months, so subscribe if you're interested. Basically I put anything there that I either can't spend a lot of time on or that I think won't connect well with the audience on this main channel.

Second, we completely sold out of the 478 tenugui's (hand towels) that we had on sale. Thanks to all that purchased. Even though we did a test shipment months ago and it went fine, it turns out we had no clue how to properly ship a large amount of small packets from Japan to the rest of the world. It took us a couple weeks to figure out what to do, pack the items, and ship all the orders. We (and by we I mean my sister-in-law Akko) has been dropping off shipments all week and the final shipment is going out today. Because of COVID, low cost (under 1,000 yen vs. over 3,000 yen) air shipments to many countries stopped and still hasn't been restored. So a lot of orders are going by SEA, which will take a couple months. I apologize for the delay, but I trust they'll all safely arrive to their destinations. There were 68 orders that could be shipped via AIR as a low cost small packet, so for those lucky countries you should be getting your orders in 2-4 weeks.

Okay, have a good one everyone! watch video on watch page

FYI, we only have 70 Life Where I'm From tenuguis (traditional Japanese hand towels) left in stock at shop.lifewhereimfrom.com/. If you have no clue what I'm talking about, we made our own hand-dyed Japanese towels which was a lot more hands-on and labour intensive than I ever thought. You can check out the video at https://youtu.be/F87Iw5oBWUI.

Sorry, no video out on the main channel yet. I'm having some eye issues and can't edit as much as I'd like. But good news is that Akko (my sister-in-law) made a video all about karaage, which usually means a kind of fried chicken, but you can fry anything in the karaage style. It's up on the X channel now. It's her first fully produced and edited video. She even did the narration! I hope you enjoy! https://youtu.be/fEFRnpCcjEQ watch video on watch page

I was looking through some comments recently and came across some about this video I shot last year about an 80 year old guy that still runs a sento, a public bath. It inspired me to rewatch it, and I have to say, I'm really proud to have made this. At times I get the feeling that I hate all my videos and think what's the point of what I'm doing, but this video makes me feel like I occasionally get something right. I don't exactly remember how I ended up deciding on the editing style, but this is very bare bones in terms of narration and music. It's kind of like you're a fly on the wall at points. To me, it's a very insightful day into the life of Sakai-san, the family that supports him, and the community that he supports. If you haven't seen it, and have 15 minutes, I think you might like it. watch video on watch page

A creator that makes some excellent explainer videos on Japanese shokunin (craftspeople) is Bobby from Q2 Japan. He has a new series of 2-3 minutes videos called Bite Size Q2 which I think are excellent and something you'd all love to watch. watch video on watch page

I'll be filming in Taiwan May 15-17. I'm looking to film someone who uses Goshare scooters. Would take anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours depending on how much time you have. If you can do it, I'd love to know, just drop me a line at www.lifewhereimfrom.com/contact/
