WHAT IT TAKES TO SELECT A MIST ELIMINATOR AS A CHEMICAL PROCESS ENGINEER IN PLANT DESIGN?
Vessel separators are one of a few equipments that we, chemical process engineers, really get involved with design. In chemical process engineering and plant design, you do not design compressors, pumps, control valves, tubes, pressure relief devices. What you will do is just select the one that best fit to our process. But for vessel separators we have the opportunity to define diameter and height. And that is rewarding, even though in the end, the final dimensions will be influenced by manufacture materials (plate size for instance). ๐
A important step for a vessel separator design is the definition for having a mist eliminator or not. It will influence vessel diameter and height. In the order hand, to be able to do this decision, first you need to identify the droplet diameter to be removed.
For instance, in towers used in glycol dehydration and amine sweetening in which mists are a major source of costly solvent losses, removal of droplets down to 5 ยตm is recommended. Based on that, knitted wire mesh is the most common type of mist eliminator used and interception is the primary mechanism.
In the picture you can find reference for droplet diameter size. Just as a reminder, entrained liquid does not consist of same-sized droplets, but as a broad range of droplet sizes that may be characterized with a Normal or Bell Distribution centered about some mean or average. The average droplet size depends very much on the mechanism by which they are generated.
