Saturday, April 27th marks August Wilson’s birthday! August Wilson, hailed as America’s Shakespeare, left an indelible mark on the landscape of American theater with his groundbreaking Century Cycle, a series of ten plays set in Pittsburgh’s Hill District. Chronicling the African American experience throughout the twentieth century, Wilson’s works captured the essence of joy, frustration, history, and culture of his community.

🚑 In 1967, Pittsburgh’s inner city produced America’s first EMT service. John Moon, one of the original Freedom House trail blazers, visited with Jim Cunningham to talk about the exhibit in the City County Building lobby celebrating the work of the pioneers in providing lifesaving medical services when few others were willing to venture in to Pittsburgh’s Hill District in the 60s & 70s.

🚑 Freedom House was initially conceived to respond to the needs of Pittsburgh’s African American community who often times, couldn’t rely on police & fire departments during an emergency. Their ground breaking work became the basis for all paramedics training in the country.
