There were all sorts of interesting stories from this last month: Odysee removing ads, the decompilation of Banjo Kazooie, the ROM hack releases of Super Mario Eclipse and Pokemon Emerald Seaglass, the fan revival of the Satellaview, and so much more. However, I'm taking a break from uploading. DON'T WORRY I'M NOT QUITTING YOUTUBE! Quite the opposite in fact: The journey is just beginning, and I'm going all in on preparing a brand new series for the channel. I got ambitious, and I’m currently working on 8 separate videos, the raw footage and audio of which is currently over 500 GB. So my limited spare time is going into getting the new series off the ground.

Realistically, a content pivot or expansion needs to happen on this channel. Casual news videos alone are not a valid long term growth strategy. It's usually a coin flip as to whether or not it leads to gaining or losing subscribers, and if I were to add up the numbers from each video in my analytics, it would be slightly net negative.

There's a term in content creation known as "evergreen content": something that remains relevant or viewable for a very long period of time, hopefully forever. I want and need to focus on producing more evergreen content to continue growing long term.

Lastly, when I made the Banjo Tooie no backtracking challenge video, I had so much more fun making that than any other video by far. I like the idea of challenge videos, and I have the perfect opportunity to do so since I live near affordable used game stores, and I've been using softmodded consoles/dumping tools to back up my games for decades now.

I've mentioned Retroachievements on this channel several times before: it’s a community that adds modern style achievements to older game. I gave it a try, and I unexpectedly ended up loving it way more than I thought I would. I normally don't care about achievements in modern games one bit, but the structure of these curated sets are perfect for challenge videos, and I really like the community.

retroachievements.org/

I've completed multiple sets now, recording my gameplay along the way. I’ll be making videos about my experiences as I complete and review the sets, which also doubles as a guide for future players. Some harder challenge highlights so far include me collecting every single coin in Super Mario 64, beating Super Mario Sunshine without using the hover nozzle, and tying a world record in Pokemon Snap.

The plan is to release the first 2-3 episodes all at once when ready, and then every episode after that will be early access on Patreon before public release, with supporters also appearing in the credits. With 5 boxes of games underneath the cart reader in this photo, I’m at no shortage of potential video ideas.

But does that mean that the news videos are being retired? That's not the plan, but it is on hiatus until the new Retroachievents series production has stabilized and can be produced/released at a semi-consistent rate, which I honestly expect to be around December. From there I’ll re-assess everything and see what needs to be changed to get some gaming and tech news back into the mix.

The current video lineup is just a backlog of my already completed sets: Shadow Hearts, Super Mario 64, Pokemon Snap, Super Mario Sunshine, and then some Sunshine hacks. Then for October, I've ordered a pal copy of Luigi's Mansion to showcase that set along with 3 different hacks for that game. If I somehow complete all of that in a timely manner (which I doubt I will), I want to run through Clock Tower on the PS1 before the remaster comes out on PC.

Then through the end of November, it's a heavy Gamecube focus because of a website event, and then December into next year will wind down with older consoles and games decided by community voting. You’re always welcome to suggest a game, including right now in the comments if you’d like. If I have it or have a means to acquire it at non-scalper prices, I'll definitely consider it.

I'm looking forward to my return. Until then, take care!

This next video has definitely been my favorite one to work on so far, and it's about a week away from airing.

The most common criticism of Banjo-Tooie is the amount of backtracking that it has, but how much is actually required? A whole lot less than you think. With the help of some advanced techniques, developer oversights and major glitches, we're about to see just how much of this massive collectathon can be completed if you only visit each level a single time.

Place your guesses for how many Jiggies and Jinjos can be collected without any backtracking, and we'll see if anyone can guess the correct numbers (Jiggies such as returning the relic and starting the oil drill will not count since you briefly leave the level)

Jiggies: x/90
Jinjos : x/45

In the meantime, you can see behind the scenes on Patreon or Ko-fi (nothing is locked behind a paywall)

I hope everyone is doing well! I just discovered the Kickstarter campaign for Runa, and it has less than 48 hours left. If you enjoy games such as Persona 5, Xenoblade Chronichles, and Dragon Quest, be sure to check out their trailer and campaign.

In other news: I managed to get the flu for the first time ever, and it was an awful 2 weeks. The next news video's visual portions have been mostly completed in advance, so now it's time to record audio over the next few evenings after work to sync up and finish up now that I have a voice again. It's definitely going to be around the 1 hour mark on the next one, mostly because the DOJ v Apple story has a whole lot of information to unpack, so I want to give the best possible breakdown of it. Among other stories, you can expect to hear about the Internet Archive, Gamecube emulation, lost games being found, and (in honor of Runa) some business management insights as to all the things that nobody tells you about after a successful Kickstarter campaign.

Other separate videos on the back burner include:

-Which Emulators Should you Actually be Using in 2024? (Delayed because I had to redo large portions of the script after the Tropic Haze situation, as well as look at several of the new forks that emerged)

-A video that involves breaking apart Banjo Tooie for the N64. The gameplay footage and rough draft of the script are both about 75% done, so that should be out in early July.

And then possibly a video on Shadow Hearts for the PS2, which I played for the first time a few weeks ago while sick in bed. Not certain on that video yet though. We'll see how it looks after a script starts to come together.

Until next time, take care!

Hope you all are doing well! Next video is fully recorded and about halfway edited. It should be uploaded next week. In the off chance that it's finished on April 1st, just know that nothing in it is a joke (though I may add a visual gag for the occasion). There's been a lot of noisy construction work right outside my home this week, so I apologize in advance if it's noticeable in the next video.

On the plus side, there's a bit of everything in the world of obscure gaming news this time around: fan translations, lost media, rom hacks, and even a PS1 game decompilation. I also took the time to read all of the Tropic Haze lawsuit papers, so you all get to find out why Citra and Yuzu were shut down while Ryujinx remains safe.

See you all soon!
