The Birth of a Pearl
A pearl's journey begins when an irritant, such as a grain of sand or a tiny parasite, accidentally slips inside an oyster. In response to this foreign intruder, the oyster produces a substance called nacre, a lustrous material composed primarily of calcium carbonate (about 95%). Layer upon layer of nacre is deposited around the irritant over time, eventually forming a beautiful pearl.
