Emergence [THREAD]

Stephen King is a writer who writes horror books. He has been consistent for a long time.

Where does he get his ideas?

He once famously said:
β€˜I don’t know where I get my ideas. But if I did, would I tell you?'

Great response.

The question still remains:
Where does he get his ideas?

Creative people have different responses.

Some say great ideas happen when they are least expecting it. Others say that they put in conscious effort.

What do both groups have in common?
They have their experiences.

Both individuals are right. Some access ideas better when there is little cognitive effort.
For others, it's the opposite.

Both individuals still need their experience.

Where does Stephen King get the scary ideas?
I doubt he lives such a scary life.

In the world of creativity, there are different rules. You can take the emotion from a scary moment in your life & pair it with a separate real-life experience.

This can lead to a BRAND-NEW IDEA.

The cross combination of an experience being cross combined with a feeling leads to emergence.

"Emergence" is going to be an important word in the upcoming years. No matter which field you're in.

Emergence happens when something new (as it seems to the senses) is created. You wouldn't have expected that creation when analyzing the individual parts.

We see emergence all the time.
If you're into cooking, then that's an example.

Imagine if we are viewing food in terms of states:
Done/Not done

Imagine fried chicken that is undercooked, but everything else is correct.

The seasoning is right.
It's high-quality chicken.
The chef gave you the best sauces as well.

Only problem?
Chicken is undercooked.
You can still see the pink.

Would you eat it?
'Hell no!'
Why?
'Because it's undercooked.'
All the other parts are okay though.
'Doesn't matter. The chicken is still undercooked.'

When viewing the chicken from the perspective of emergence, it's either cooked or not cooked.

As the person who is eating the chicken, it doesn't matter if the chicken needs another 10 minutes to cook. They just care if it's done or not.

When there is a binary factor involved, there is an emergence that comes to the final product.

Emergence is something that cannot be fully expected.

This is why a lot of great entrepreneurs like business plans.
But they don't love it.

It's because when a system is added to the environment, the environments can be a reason for the emergence.

These completely new properties are difficult to predict in the beginning. A business plan should be iterative for that reason.

It's difficult to know exactly how Stephen King gets his ideas. But if you were to ask him, he may describe something along the lines of emergence.

Just like a professional cook knows the difference between a dish that is done or not done, Stephen King knows the difference between a good idea and a not so good one.

It's difficult to explain. But in the world of creativity, odd combinations lead to unique results.

Odd combinations can be the reason for infinite ideas. Infinite states of emergence.
