Just finished modeling and texturing the first gun for my upcoming gun tutorial, which will be part of my Half-Life: Alyx series in Unreal Engine 5. It’s a classic M11911, and you’ll be able to download it for free along with the other gun assets. I will be creating when the tutorial goes live.

I’ve been working as an XR/VR Developer with GM Design for about 2.5 years now. I can’t share a lot of my work because it’s confidential R&D, so it was exciting to stumble across this video that highlights some of what we do in design. Great to see immersive tech included—something my team directly supports! Designing cars and building software is such a rewarding experience.

Hey everyone!

I’ve been getting a few questions across various platforms about when my next tutorial will be out, so I wanted to give you a quick update on what I’ve been working on. I’m currently in the middle of two tutorials:

The first one is all about physics hands for the VR Pawn. It’s functioning well so far, but I’m adding some extra functionality to make it more realistic. For example, when you create hand animations—like pointing your finger—the collision will update dynamically. Right now, I’ve only got a basic sphere collider on the hand, but I want the physics to match the actual hand shape for more accurate interactions with objects.

The second tutorial is on creating guns from Half-Life: Alyx. I’m walking you through how to build a simple gun actor that can be easily replicated for different types of guns. I’ll also be sharing custom models for you to download and use in your own projects. I’m almost done modeling the pistol and will move on to the shotgun and SMG next. These assets will be free to download once the tutorial is live!

I know it’s been a bit since my last tutorial, and I appreciate your patience! Real life has been pretty busy, and these tutorials are taking a bit longer to put together compared to my usual content. Thanks for sticking with me, and I can’t wait to share these tutorials with you soon!

Also, I’ve included a poll at the bottom to get your thoughts on some other types of tutorials that you may be interested in creating.

Hey everyone!

I’m currently in Seattle attending Unreal Fest 2024! I’m really looking forward to meeting other Unreal developers and learning more about Unreal Engine at the different talks, keynotes, and mixers. There’s a lot of exciting content here, and I can’t wait to bring back what I learn and share it with all of you in future tutorials and videos.

If there’s anything specific you’d like me to cover, feel free to let me know in the comments. Looking forward to leveling up our skills together!

Hey everyone,

I'm excited to re-upload my Thumbstick Locomotion Template for Unreal Engine 5.4!

This refreshed version of the original tutorial is designed to help you integrate smooth and responsive locomotion into your VR projects. I’ve made several improvements for better clarity and fixed some bugs from the first version. Most importantly, this template uses community-based code, ensuring it's free from any code belonging to creators who prefer their work not to be shared.

The locomotion system feels just like the one from Half-Life: Alyx, and I can’t wait for you all to try it out for yourselves!

Update on the Thumbstick Locomotion Tutorial

Hey everyone,

I wanted to take a moment to address why my thumbstick locomotion tutorial was taken down a little while back and give you all an exciting update.

Unfortunately, I was approached by another creator who claimed ownership over parts of the code used in my original tutorial. Although I disagreed with their claim, I chose to take the high road and remove the video. I didn’t want to step on anyone’s toes or undercut another creator’s work. So, I decided to rework the entire system from scratch, using a different function so there could be no question that the code belonged to them.

I’m happy to announce that the updated code is now ready to download on gumroad! It no longer contains any code from the previous creator, and while thumbstick locomotion in Unreal Engine can be fairly straightforward with minimal variation, I’ve reworked everything from the ground up. The methods I used are largely inspired by @lgaard8884's videos from way back in 2017, using his function for setting the location and rotation of the player capsule in relation to the player camera.

I was also fortunate to get some help from another fantastic VR creator, @head mounted software . After I had to take my tutorial down, he reached out to me, feeling it was unfair that I was put in that position. He generously shared a more universal locomotion system that’s open for anyone to use, and he even compiled proof of origin for the files. You can check out his video on the topic here (it's really worth the watch): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcWxS....

Huge thanks to Andrew helping me out with this!

With all of that said, my reworked project is now available on Gumroad, and I’ve added plenty of new code as part of my attempt to recreate the Half-Life: Alyx locomotion system. This version no longer uses any code from the previously mentioned creator, and I feel confident calling it my own product. The new price is $10, which I believe reflects the true value of the work I’ve put into it. I’m not selling it for $3 anymore as I don’t want to undercut anyone.

I’ll be recreating the tutorial video soon, intending to have it live next week. Thank you all for your patience and support. I’m really excited to move forward with my Half-Life: Alyx series. Next up—GUNS!

A few years ago, when I was a junior in college. I created this backpack asset for my advanced 3D modeling class. When I finished the project, I uploaded the asset to sketchfab, hoping someone would get some use out of it.

3 years later I got a message from ‪@OscarHooghuisCG‬, who used my backpack in his super sweet animation for his submission to Kinetic Rush.

I think his animation breakdown is super cool and definitely deserves more attention and love. So do me a favor and go check his video out. https://youtu.be/bzkzQZ5icvc?si=ORpeb...

Hello everyone,

I wanted to inform you that I’ve temporarily taken down the Thumbstick Locomotion tutorial and the associated Gumroad post. This decision was made in response to some concerns that were brought to my attention regarding the content.

I’ve been working to address these concerns and am committed to ensuring that all my content is of the highest quality and integrity. While I work on resolving the situation, I’ll be exploring alternative solutions to provide you with valuable resources.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support. I’ll keep you updated on any developments and look forward to bringing you more content soon.

Best regards,
Quinn Kuslich
