Met my first yellow legged hornets, asian hornet, aziatische hoornaar that goes by the official name of Vespa velutina a couple days ago at my home apiary.
And i am totally not happy about it. These hornets actively hunt for (honey)bees and can truly devastate an entire apiary in the end.

These invasive species entered europe(and they also have been spotted in america recently) via a boat entering the south of France and from there they spread like wildfire. No natural predators and enough bees to hunt made them succesfull very fast.

They cam into the Netherlands a couple years ago and this year is the first time i encounter them.
Steps are taken to find and locate the nest and hopefully eliminate this threat to our pollinators.

Are you fellow naturelovers interested in a video (or videos) about how to locate them?

Getting there 😁
Just a few more hives for this apiary, so they deserved their own playlist:

The bramble is starting to bloom(and the linden is starting anytime now)
Bramble is one of the best plants for bees(and other pollinators), high sugar content in the nectar and a very long blooming time supplying food right into the beginning of autumn. Not to mention the delicious fruits 😁🐝🐝🐝👍

She took quite a while longer to bloom this year, normally she blooms februari for me. But finally she is opening her blooms, my absolute favorite orchid!
Better late than never with this beauty 😊

Yesterday we organised the 2nd annual Insemination Day at our local beekeepers society 😁
Beautiful queens, great semen and we had a great time connecting to fellow beekeepers from all around. And of course an excellent inseminator too 😁
Onto 2023 for the third one 😁

I am busy editing a video about the new apiary.
And now i am wondering, how shall we name this apiary?
As these hives will be for pollination projects my suggestion would be:

The Pollinator Brigade
