I may get blasted for being 'full of myself' for this. But, as an obscure artist, if I don't believe in myself and what I do, I will simply give up. I'll stop creating. I'll stop hoping. I'll just stop everything. Including living. Of course, I do have plenty of moments where I question how good one piece or performance was, if it was good at all. I have the 'this is all rubbish' days. But, I have times, looking and LISTENING back, where I close my eyes and think... 'wow! She's awesome. Listen to that. She definitely gets me. Listen to that voice. Really listen to those f-ing brilliant lyrics. Feel it. That's powerful. That's gorgeous. That's REALLY GOOD. I like her. I want to follow that artist. I'm a super fan!' Because, when it comes down to it, I *am* good and worth listening to and liking and sharing and following and supporting and telling other people about!

Today, I have been busy editing more footage from my York gig. I've uploaded a two for one, with how I opened my set at The Fulford Arms on Sunday evening, the 21st of April. Hard to believe it was only a little over a week ago. Definitely one of the best gigs I've ever had!

Let's talk about the lyre. Yesterday, I spent time watching a classic @DoctorWho story in which the Doctor and his companions were in ancient Rome at the time of, no other than, the notoriously nutty Nero. Now, how often have you heard - or been guilty yourself of saying - 'Nero played the fiddle/violin while Rome burned'?
He couldn't have. And, he didn't. Violins, and the whole family of instruments to which they belong, weren't invented until the 16th century. Emperor Nero played the lyre whilst Rome burned.
Glad to say, Doctor Who got it right. And, there were a couple of gorgeous lyres in the show I would've LOVED to have gotten my fingers on.
Nero was a narcissist, pompous and full of self-importance, and he fancied himself a great musician. To do that, he would've needed an easy instrument to play, something that it's damn close to impossible to make sound bad.
Now, as a lyrist myself, I can safely and sagely say, to make the lyre sound great requires some bit of skill, BUT (and it's a big enough but to make Sir Mix-A-Lot jump for joy) it, hands down, is the easiest stringed and plucked instrument to play and, if you have fingers, opposable thumbs and a modicum of hearing, you can produce something on it that sounds pleasant pretty much no matter who you are, mad Emperor or no.
I prefer to play mine whilst candles burn...
My point here. The violin, in contrast, is extremely difficult to play. That's one thing. But, first off, it just did not exist in the time of Nero. I doubt he would've been able to play it if it had done. I know *I* can't play the bloody (beautiful) things. And, so... Nero didn't fiddle while Rome burned; he fingered. Nero was fingering his lyre while Rome burned. 😂🔥 And, here we can go into all the, ooh er... fingering making things hot jokes... or not. 🙄
