Get ready for a new era in astronomy and astrophysics with Rubin Observatory!
Construction of this revolutionary facility in Chile is almost complete. For the first ten years of operations, Rubin Observatory will produce the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), using the 8.4-meter Simonyi Survey Telescope and the 3200 megapixel LSST Camera. The light-collecting power of this uniquely-designed telescope, combined with the sensitivity of the camera (the largest ever built for astronomy and astrophysics), will produce images revealing distant objects that are about 20 million times fainter than those visible with the unaided eye. Full science operations are scheduled to begin in 2025.
