Captain Shubham Gupta, a valiant officer of the Indian Army's 9 Para (Special Forces), hailed from the Taj Ganj area of Agra, Uttar Pradesh. Born on October 7, 1995, he was the son of Basant Kumar Gupta and Pushpa Devi Gupta, with a younger brother named Rishabh Gupta. From a young age, Shubham aspired to serve in the armed forces, a dream he pursued with unwavering dedication.

In 2015, at the age of 19, Shubham joined the Indian Army through the Technical Entry Scheme (TES). He completed his training at the Officers' Training Academy (OTA) in Gaya and was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Corps of Signals in 2018. Driven by a passion for adventure and a commitment to serve at the forefront, he volunteered for the elite 9 Para (SF). After undergoing rigorous selection and training, he became part of this distinguished unit, renowned for its expertise in mountain warfare and counter-insurgency operations.

In November 2023, Captain Gupta's unit was deployed in the Rajouri sector of Jammu and Kashmir. On November 22, during a joint operation with the 63 Rashtriya Rifles and Jammu & Kashmir Police in the Kalakote area of the Gulabgarh forest, his team engaged in a fierce encounter with terrorists. Displaying exceptional bravery, Captain Gupta led his troops from the front. Tragically, he sustained fatal injuries during the operation and was martyred at the age of 28. The encounter also claimed the lives of four other soldiers: Captain MV Pranjal, Havildar Abdul Majid, Lance Naik Sanjay Bisht, and Paratrooper Sachin Laur.

In recognition of his gallantry and supreme sacrifice, Captain Shubham Gupta was posthumously awarded the Sena Medal on January 26, 2024. His legacy continues to inspire countless individuals, exemplifying the courage and dedication of the Indian Army's Special Forces.

Havildar Bahadur Singh Bohra was a distinguished Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) in the Indian Army's 10th Battalion, Parachute Regiment (Special Forces). Born in the remote village of Rawalkhet in Pithoragarh district, Uttarakhand, he was the youngest of four siblings. He is survived by his wife, Shanti, and two daughters, Mansi and Sakshi.

On September 25, 2008, during a search operation in Lawanz, Jammu & Kashmir, Havildar Bohra and his team encountered a group of terrorists. Demonstrating exceptional bravery, he charged at the terrorists, eliminating one despite sustaining severe gunshot wounds. Refusing evacuation, he continued the assault, neutralizing two more terrorists at close range before succumbing to his injuries. His actions were recognized with the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peacetime gallantry award, awarded posthumously.

Havildar Bohra's legacy is honored by the Indian Army and the nation, remembering his supreme sacrifice and unwavering courage in the line of duty.

• Wing Commander Hanumanth Rao Sarathi was a dedicated officer of the Indian Air Force (IAF), born on October 28, 1987, in Ganeshpura, Belgaum district, Karnataka. He was the son of Honorary Captain Revansiddappa Sarathi, a retired army veteran, and had a brother, Group Captain Praveen Sarathi, who is also serving in the IAF. Inspired by his family's military background, he pursued a career in the armed forces from a young age.

• After completing his schooling at Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 2 in Belgaum, he was selected for the prestigious National Defence Academy (NDA). Upon graduation, he joined the IAF as a fighter pilot and served at various airbases across the country. He was married to Mimansha, and the couple had a daughter and a son.

• By January 2023, Wing Commander Sarathi was serving as an instructor at the Tactics and Air Combat Development Establishment (TACDE) in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. On January 28, 2023, during a routine training mission, a tragic mid-air collision occurred between a Sukhoi-30MKI and a Mirage 2000 aircraft over the Pahargarh area in Morena district, Madhya Pradesh. While two pilots from the Sukhoi-30MKI ejected safely, Wing Commander Sarathi, piloting the Mirage 2000, unfortunately lost his life in the incident.

• His mortal remains were brought to his hometown, Belagavi, where he was laid to rest with full military honors. He is remembered as a committed soldier and a gallant air warrior who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation at the age of 35.

He was a dedicated and skilled fighter pilot, serving his country with courage and determination. His untimely demise was a great loss to the Indian Armed Forces and the nation.

• Early Life and Background :-

Advitiya Bal hailed from Jammu and Kashmir. He grew up in a family that valued discipline, patriotism, and service to the nation. From a young age, he exhibited a keen interest in aviation and aspired to become a fighter pilot. His dedication and hard work led him to join the prestigious Indian Air Force, where he underwent rigorous training to earn his wings.

• Service in the Indian Air Force :-

Flight Lieutenant Advitiya Bal was commissioned into the IAF as a fighter pilot. He was posted at the Uttarlai Air Base in Barmer, Rajasthan, one of the crucial airbases of the IAF. He flew the MiG-21, a supersonic jet that had served as the backbone of India’s air defense for decades but had also been involved in several accidents over the years.

Despite the risks associated with flying an aging aircraft, Advitiya Bal displayed immense courage and professionalism. He was known for his dedication to duty, discipline, and commitment to safeguarding India’s airspace. His colleagues and superiors regarded him as a skilled pilot with a bright future in the Air Force.

• The Tragic MiG-21 Crash :-

On the night of July 28, 2022, Flight Lieutenant Advitiya Bal and Wing Commander Mohit Rana were on a routine training sortie in a twin-seater MiG-21 aircraft. Shortly after takeoff from Uttarlai Air Base in Barmer, the aircraft crashed under mysterious circumstances. Both pilots lost their lives on impact. The cause of the crash was later attributed to technical failure, highlighting the ongoing concerns over the aging MiG-21 fleet in the IAF.

• Nation’s Tribute and Legacy :-

The loss of Flight Lieutenant Advitiya Bal was deeply mourned by the nation, his family, and the Indian Air Force. Tributes poured in from across the country, recognizing his bravery and service. His sacrifice once again raised concerns about the need to modernize India’s fighter jet fleet and retire older aircraft to ensure pilot safety.

In his honor, various memorials and tributes were held in his hometown and by the IAF community. His legacy continues to inspire young aspiring pilots and serves as a reminder of the risks that military personnel take to protect their nation.

Major Mayank Vishnoi was a dedicated officer of the Indian Army, hailing from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. Born to retired Subedar Virendra Vishnoi and Smt. Madhu Vishnoi, he had two sisters, Tanu and Anu. He completed his schooling at Kendriya Vidyalaya Punjab Lines in Meerut and was inspired to join the armed forces from a young age, following in his father's footsteps. He was selected for the Technical Entry Scheme (TES) and trained at the Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Gaya, commissioning into the Rajput Regiment in 2013.

In 2018, Major Vishnoi married Swati, a lawyer from Himachal Pradesh. He was later deputed to the 44 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) battalion, actively participating in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir. On August 27, 2021, during an operation in Shopian district, he sustained a severe head injury from terrorist gunfire. After battling for life for 14 days, he succumbed to his injuries on September 10, 2021, at the age of 30.

For his exemplary courage and dedication, Major Vishnoi was posthumously awarded the Sena Medal. His wife, Swati Vishnoi, has since honored his memory by fulfilling his wishes and engaging in activities he loved.

Colonel M N Rai hailed from Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh. The youngest of the three brothers Col M N Rai was commissioned into the 2/9 Gorkha Rifles in September 1997. His eldest brother Lt Col D N Rai like him also belongs to the Gorkha Regiment, while his second brother Y N Rai is serving with the CRPF. Later, Col M N Rai was deputed to serve with the Rashtriya Rifles and took over the command of the 42nd Battalion of Rashtriya Rifles in May 2013.



By 2013, Col M N Rai had put in over 15 years of service and evolved into a committed soldier and a very fine officer. His unit, 42 RR was engaged in counter-insurgency operations and had taken part in various operations to contain militancy in the J & K. Col Rai was decorated with the Yudh Seva medal on the eve of Republic Day in 2015 for outstanding contribution in planning and conduct of operations including a gun battle with militants in south Kashmir in 2014.



Tral Operation: 27 Jan 2015



By Jan 2015, Col Rai had completed nearly one and half years as commanding officer of 42 RR, which was responsible for counter-insurgency operations in Tral sector in Pulwama district of J & K. Tral had been a hotbed of militancy as it provided suitable terrain for militants to operate. On 27 Jan 2015, the unit had received credible information about the presence of terrorists in the village under its area of operational control. After analyzing the situation a decision was taken by the security forces to launch a joint operation by the Army, CRPF, and the police.



The suspected militants were hiding in a house which was soon surrounded by the security forces. On being challenged the militants started firing and a fierce gun battle ensued. At this point, reportedly, the father and brother of one of the terrorists informed the assault team that the ultras would surrender. Col Rai displaying good leadership and following the Army doctrine of WHAM(Winning Hearts and Minds), decided to give the militants an opportunity to surrender. The militants, however, took advantage of this act of compassion and started firing in order to escape. The forces soon cornered the militants after a while and gunned down the two militants. But during the heavy exchange of fire Col M N Rai got severely injured and later succumbed to his injuries. Col M N Rai was given the gallantry award, “Shaurya Chakra” for his cold courage, leadership and supreme sacrifice during this operation.



Col M N Rai was martyred in the operation but the exemplary courage and leadership skills displayed by Col Rai would always be remembered. Col M N Rai is survived by his wife Priyanka, daughters Alka & Richa and son Aditya. At the funeral of Col M N Rai, his daughter Alka then 11 years old made his Regiment and the entire nation proud by bidding her father a farewell with the Gurkha Regiment’s war cry, “Ayo Gorkhali” meaning ” The Gorkhas are here”.

Captain Anshuman Singh was a dedicated officer of the Indian Army Medical Corps, serving as the Regimental Medical Officer with the 26 Punjab Regiment in the Siachen Glacier region. On July 19, 2023, a fire broke out at the Chandan Dropping Zone in Siachen due to a short circuit. Demonstrating exceptional bravery, Captain Singh rescued several soldiers from the blaze. Tragically, while attempting to retrieve medical supplies to aid others, he was unable to escape the rapidly spreading fire and lost his life in the line of duty.

In recognition of his valor, Captain Singh was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra, India's second-highest peacetime gallantry award. The honor was received by his mother, Smt. Manju Singh, and his wife, Smt. Smriti Singh, from President Smt. Droupadi Murmu on July 5, 2024.

Following his passing, discussions arose regarding the Indian Army's 'Next of Kin' (NoK) policy. Captain Singh had designated his wife as his NoK, leading to her receiving the majority of the entitlements. His parents have since advocated for a revision of this policy, suggesting that it should consider the duration of the marriage and the inclusion of parents, especially in cases where the marriage was relatively recent and there are no children.
