I love to see it. This was a great feeling to put my people on to more opportunities. Rahmel helped me during my job search process. Now weā€™re both featured in Business Insider. Looking back on it starting the preparing for my meta interview series was a great idea.

I was featured in Business Insider today!

When I started documenting my Meta interview preparation on YouTube, I had no idea how many people it would reach. But I knew it could provide value to others facing the same interview process.

That decision turned lemons into lemonade. If I had simply done the interview without sharing the journey, I would have missed the opportunity to be featured in a leading global business news website.

Thank you to Jonathan Exume and Rahmel Bailey for helping me prepare for the interview and Khayla McClinton for the photo. šŸŽ‰

Excited to share that Iā€™ll be starting my new role next Monday, and part of the job involves using Snowflake.

To get ahead, I recently attended the Snowflake World Tour conference in Atlanta.

This is a key part of my strategy: learning with purpose.

Atlanta offers countless opportunities to attend events and workshops, but the real question isā€”do these events align with your goals?

After being laid off in April 2024, I attended every networking event, mixer, hackathon, and conference I could find. While I gained valuable connections, I realized the skills I was learning didnā€™t translate into the roles I wanted.

Just like businesses justify expenses before making purchases, individuals need to evaluate the ROI of their learning.

Before pursuing a certification, ask yourself, ā€œDoes the company I work forā€”or want to work forā€”value this skill?ā€

For example, I earned a Databricks certificate but struggled to find roles that aligned with it. However, as more companies are using Snowflake, I focused on that and it directly helped me land my new role.

Be intentional with your time and focus on learning what will help you achieve your goals.

How do you prefer to learn new skills? Drop a comment below šŸ‘‡

I gave my first keynote speech last night! This was a great experience and Iā€™m looking forward to more opportunities to share my stories.

The name of this talk is ā€œNobody Buys Humble Unlocking Business Strategy From A Data Engineerā€. Letā€™s get active and build our billions.

ā€œIā€™m going to win in the end.ā€

ā€œIf you donā€™t believe in yourself, no one will.ā€

ā€œThings arenā€™t going to get easier. You have to get better at doing the hard things.ā€

These are quotes I remind myself of daily. Whenever I feel inadequate, I remind myself to think big, positive thoughts.

I have achieved many things in life, but I still have more goals to reach. I let my desire to accomplish those goals drive me as I move forward toward success.

Iā€™ve worked on projects that were worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Iā€™ve been mentored by some of the greatest minds in technology. Iā€™ve presented to high level leaders for Fourtune 500 companies. Iā€™ve been in charge of making decisions for products that yielded millions of dollars in revenue.

ā€œItā€™s not about where youā€™re from itā€™s about where youā€™re going.ā€

ā€œWe do not make one big jump to success. We get there one step at a time.ā€

Tell yourself that youā€™re great. ā€œNobody buys humble.ā€ Let the world know how amazing you are, and keep striving for success.

Personal development doesnā€™t directly affect professional development.

I joined a run club, but that doesnā€™t make me a better candidate as a data engineer. People tell me that if it isnā€™t directly related to getting a new job as a data engineer donā€™t do it. Running doesnā€™t have anything to do with coding in Python and SQL. Despite what some may say itā€™s still important to take care of your health.

Personal development builds character, confidence, discipline, mental stability, and relieves stress.

I already have proven experience and expertise in coding for Fortune 500 companies along with a degree and certifications to back it up. My network is full of people who will vouch for my skills.

Since I was laid off, Iā€™ve gained more visibility and have built my network. Iā€™ve volunteered to mentor underprivileged kids in the Atlanta area, been featured in big time international magazine newsletters like ForbesBLK, shared rooms with millionaires at the Google Atlanta offices, and started teaching others how to code. Iā€™ve also spoken at tech bootcamps and workshops. Iā€™ve joined several nonprofit organizations.

The job market is tough right now, and getting an offer isnā€™t easy. Staying idle isnā€™t an option. Staying active brings you closer to your goals.
