- About the Song -

This hymn was written by Thomas Chisholm (1866–1960). Born in rural Kentucky, USA, he worked as a teacher and a newspaper editor before briefly becoming a Methodist minister. However, due to health issues, he had to resign after about a year. He continued to live a quiet life of faith, working as an insurance agent.

Though he was not particularly blessed with wealth or health, Chisholm made it a habit to write poetry and is said to have written around 1,200 poems in his lifetime. One of these was the text for “Great Is Thy Faithfulness.”

Composer William M. Runyan was deeply moved when he read the poem and set it to music. The hymn was published by Hope Publishing that same year.

In a letter to the publisher, Chisholm wrote:

“My income has never been large due to impaired health in early years, and so I must not fail to record here the unfailing faithfulness of a covenant-keeping God and how He has given me many wonderful displays of His providing care.”

Rather than dramatic miracles or spiritual experiences, Chisholm focused on the small blessings of daily life and testified to God’s faithfulness through his words. He later said:

“This poem was written to simply bear witness to the unfailing faithfulness of God in my own life.”

Truly, this hymn is a heartfelt expression of gratitude for the unchanging faithfulness of God that carried him throughout his life.

- About This Version -

In this arrangement, we’ve added a new bridge based on the words of Jeremiah 31:33–34:

“This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the Lord.
“I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.
No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,” declares the Lord.
“For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”

This bridge celebrates God’s faithfulness and the promise that God speaks directly to our hearts, writing His law not on tablets but within us, offering restoration and forgiveness.

The promise recorded in Jeremiah reveals the heart of the “new covenant” fulfilled in Jesus Christ. It shows us that God’s unchanging faithfulness is not just a truth to believe, but a power that transforms and gives life.

Even when unseen, God’s mercy and grace are poured out daily. His faithfulness reaches the depths of our hearts and moves us to respond in worship.

Let us fix our hearts on His truth and mercy in tomorrow’s stream, and join together in praise of the One who is always faithful!

チズムは経済的にも健康的にも恵まれていたとは言えず、静かで控えめな人生を送りましたが、その中で詩を書くことを日課とし、生涯で約1200篇もの詩を書いたと伝えられています。その中のひとつが今回の曲「Great Is Thy Faithfulness」の歌詞でした。

この詩を読んだ作曲家ウィリアム・M・ランナン（William M. Runyan）は深く感動し、曲をつけ、同年にHope Publishingからこの賛美歌が出版されました。

チズムは出版社との手紙の中で、次のように記しています。
「私の収入は、若いころからの健康問題のため、常に多くはありませんでした。しかしここで、契約を守られる神の変わらぬ誠実さと、その豊かな養いを記さずにはいられません。」

エレミヤ書に記されたこの約束は、イエス・キリストによって実現した「新しい契約」の核心を表しています。それは、「変わらない」神の誠実さが、単なる事実ではなく、私たちの内側を造り変え、生かす力であるということを教えてくれます。

日々の歩みの中で、目には見えにくくとも確かに注がれている主の憐れみと恵み。心の奥深くにまで届くその誠実さに、私たちは応答し、賛美せずにはいられません。
