The City of Angels is now a sanctuary.
The Los Angeles City Council passed a sanctuary ordinance in a unanimous vote on Tuesday to protect immigrants from President-elect Donald Trump’s plans for mass deportation.
The sanctuary ordinance would not allow city resources to be used to arrest or detain anyone as part of a federal immigration effort. This includes city workers and city property. It would also ban city employees from asking about individuals’ citizenship or immigration status.
The vote came not long after LA Mayor Karen Bass called for ‘swift action’ and will take effect 10 days after she signs the ordinance. Trump has confirmed he plans to call for a national emergency on immigration and use the military for deportations.
While legal experts maintain that this will not fully stop the Trump administration from pursuing deportations, it is a significant step to protect immigrant rights in the city.

Trump’s pick for defense secretary, Fox News personality Pete Hegseth, said women shouldn’t be in combat in an interview on November 7.
‘I’m straight up just saying we should not have women in combat roles. It hasn’t made us more effective. Hasn’t made us more lethal. Has made fighting more complicated,’ Hegseth said.
The current defense secretary, Lloyd Austin, disagrees, telling NBC News that women make the military better.

President-elect Trump has nominated Mehmet Oz to head the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Information (CMS), another signal that he intends to fill out his administration with a range of right-wing TV personalities and hucksters.
Dr. Oz is, of course, most famous for his time pushing pseudoscience as a daytime TV doctor, as well as his failed 2022 Senate campaign in Pennsylvania, a state we’re still not sure to this day if he actually lived in.
If he enters CMS, Oz will be tasked with leading the federal agency that oversees Medicare, one the nation’s most enduring and landmark social programs, as well as every nursing home in the country and maintenance of the HealthCare.gov website, among many other responsibilities.
Enacting cuts to Medicare has been a desire of the right-wing political project for years, including in this year’s Project 2025 manifesto. In his statement appointing Oz, Trump seemingly hinted at such action, saying Oz 'will also cut waste and fraud within our Country's most expensive Government Agency, which is a third of our Nation's Healthcare spend, and a quarter of our entire National Budget.'

With minimal time left in the Democratic majority, the Senate has now confirmed a new head of the Office of Government Ethics. In a 50-46 vote, senators voted to confirm David Huitema as the new ethics czar for a 5-year term.
This means the Biden pick will serve throughout Trump’s presidency.
The move shines a light on the recent issues with the transition of power. Trump thus far has refused to sign any transition-related ethics agreements with the Biden administration. Without these agreements, Trump’s teams are unable to transition to office or receive access to federal agencies.
The Office of Government Ethics is not only responsible for overseeing the executive branch ethics program and preventing financial conflicts of interest but is also heavily involved with reviewing Cabinet nominations. The Senate’s confirmation comes at a time when many are questioning the validity and ethical standards of Trump’s proposed appointees.

In the wake of Donald Trump's re-election, it appears Americans are gearing up for a new wave of family planning. Planned Parenthood reported a dramatic increase in appointments for various birth control methods on November 6, the day after the election.
IUD appointments skyrocketed by 760%, while birth control implant appointments rose by 350% compared to the previous day. Most strikingly, vasectomy appointments saw an unprecedented 1200% increase.
Apparently, men are rushing to the clinic to ensure they won’t accidentally contribute to an unwanted pregnancy in a world where reproductive rights hang by a thread. Men, we salute you for doing your part!

Donald Trump has announced a string of controversial Cabinet picks so far, like choosing a man investigated for sex trafficking to be attorney general, a climate change denier to be head of the EPA, a Fox News host as the secretary of defense, and a billionaire with conflicts of interest to run the Department of Government Efficiency.
Here’s how the internet is reacting.

(2/2) Donald Trump has nominated a Fox News personality to lead the entire U.S. armed forces.
Traditionally, the secretary of defense is chosen for their lifelong experience and service, and the list of past appointees has consisted of four-star generals and tested leaders who have the capabilities and knowledge necessary to shepherd our fighting forces and protect our nation and the rest of the free world. Trump’s nominee Pete Hegseth, on the other hand, is a major in the U.S. Army who has spent his career largely focused on warmongering and lobbying in favor of pardoning war criminals.
He is a dangerous ideologue who was barred from President Biden’s inauguration security team because he couldn’t be trusted to protect the president, and he doesn’t believe in women serving in active combat roles.
He is also a serial adulterer who says he hasn’t washed his hands in 10 years, none of which apparently matters more than the ultimate qualifications for Trump: He looks good on TV and is a shameless MAGA sycophant.
