Mother Nature shook Taiwan a few days ago with a 7.2 magnitude earthquake which has thrown a wrench in my plans to ride a vintage cafe racer to this exact spot that my dad took this photo before I was born, thanks to @GeoWizard . The plan was to head out this morning from Taipei and ride the motorcycle clockwise going down Taiwan’s east coast, take the photo near the southern tip, and ride back up the west coast back to Taipei my Tuesday night like I wrote in my bucket list (Photo 3). Given that the earthquake’s epicenter was in the gorgeous Hualien area, this week’s motorcycle journey obviously didn’t happen as planned.
With stacked work trips to Jakarta and Saigon starting in 5 days, and a ton of meetings scheduled afterwards, I’m hoping to carve out another four-day-window I’ll need for this motorcycle trip before I return home to Toronto. Maybe I’ll skip the full island coastal ride and just do a day trip to the location for the photo (and save circumnavigating the whole island for next year), but regardless, I’ll keep y’all updated.
As upsetting as this was initially, Photo 4 is a screen grab from the neonatal ward of a hospital when the earthquake hit. Seeing these nurses locking all the newborn babies together in the center of the room to keep them safe while the ground beneath them shifted 3 feet back and forth immediately made me realize how ridiculous it was for me to feel upset - these nurses (like so many others who selflessly helped) are awesome 🙏

I emailed @GeoWizard a couple months ago hoping my letter would make it to his eyes through what I can only assume, is thousands of emails he probably receives every week because ever since my father passed away, I’d been fixated on a photo of my father taken WELL before I was even born. Spending my entire life growing up in Canada from infancy to adulthood, Lunar New Year was really just a nuclear family affair - a quick dinner with my folks and sis followed by a $20 dollar bill in a red envelope. Today, however, I’m abroad in Asia (currently in Taiwan) on business and things have shut down today, with the few interactions I have with strangers being them wishing me prosperity lol… or, as comedian Ronny Chieng said, they’re LITERALLY greeting me with “Hope you get rich.” So I wanna pass along the sentiment whether you observe Lunar New Year or not… keep making moves and I hope you get rich - however you define that. 🧧🐉🙏😅
