I’m waiting for the English dub to finish so I can binge it before I review it on my own, but we talked about Dragon Ball Daima on my podcast! As of that recording, I had only seen the sub, but we talk about the whole show, the good and not so good. Also, here’s a pic of my favorite scene. You can probably guess why. open.spotify.com/episode/0rByQ34Hx7NUUZJ3BdCrd8?si…

Guess a little update time. Saw I reached 1K subs! Thank you all so much for watching my content! I don’t really do much these days besides commenting on stuff but I really do appreciate you all checking me out and I’m very moved that my Toriyama post touched some of y’all. I’ll have to do a 1K Sub Special, probably another vlog but this time I’ll actually go somewhere lol! I’m also going to get ready to do the Super Hero arc of the DBS manga review soon. I took notes as I read it, so hopefully it won’t take too long to record. We’ll see. Until then, here’s a pic of a cool white lion plushie I got.

We talked about Toriyama and his influence on pop culture and on ourselves personally and creatively on my podcast. I've already said everything I can, but if you want to hear how Toriyama brought us all together, it would mean a lot to me. It's also 3 hours long so it should hopefully help you get through that long drive or whatever it is you're working on. Thank you. podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thebbspodcastshow/…

I have heard the news.

I won't lie, I'm still numb and it doesn't feel real. I also won't lie and say that I haven't thought about this possibility. I didn't think I'd have to sort through these emotions so soon, especially with other losses going on both personally and artistically. I feel like I can only honor this situation in two ways, one of which you will not see for some time. The other, however, I will do now.

To say Dragon Ball has impacted my life would be a major understatement. I discovered myself with the story. As a child, I had a love for martial arts. It was a beautiful art and skill set. Like many others in my generation, I grew up watching Batman and Spider-Man, among other series. Though truthfully, I only liked seeing the bad guys fight the good guys in hand-to-hand combat. I didn't care about anything else. The closest thing that came to Dragon Ball before was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. But when I discovered Dragon Ball, it was perfect. I first found the series when I rented the "Curse of the Blood Rubies" movie from Blockbuster. It was love at first sight. The story had a magnetic charm that, even now, I don't entirely understand. Everything just hit the right notes. And I remember going into our basement and I found some kind of rope or string or something and attached it to the ceiling and swung around. Gave myself rope burn on my finger and had to go to the doctor. The fact that I chose to imitate Son Goku swinging on a vine instead of Spider-Man swinging with his web or Batman swinging with his grappling hook thing speaks volumes on what Dragon Ball awakened in me.

I didn't follow the series much after that first viewing, besides a couple episodes on VHS, but when Dragon Ball Z aired on Cartoon Network, it was a religious experience. It felt like an old friend was returning to visit and I was excited to see what would happen next. I was completely hooked. Every day after school, I would turn on the TV and watch the latest episode. It was like a drug and I craved to see more. I know many others felt the same. For a lot of people in my generation, it's what got them interested in anime. I'm the same way. And like many others, I followed everything. GT, the video games, the toys, the cards, anything I could get my hands on, I would. In these photos you will see a small fraction of my collection and experiences. Even now, I consume Dragon Ball like it's the first meal I've had in years. And I will never stop, nor will many other fans like me.

Dragon Ball is also special in that regard. The impact it has had on so many lives cannot be ignored. It says a lot when you have fans who are sectioned off into individual groups. Meaning, you have fans who play the card game, fans who play the games, who read the comics, collect the toys, and so on. The story transcended its media and genre. And so many people found their jobs and life's calling through the story. I don't mean just the companies working on translating the story, parody projects like TeamFourStar and fan-made projects have led to fruitful careers for so many people. It has certainly inspired people to improve themselves, particularly with physical health. I'm sure you all have seen those t-shirts with Vegeta on them and a quote about pressing forward or ignoring haters. Did Vegeta really say that stuff? Not really, but it doesn't change how many broken souls were moved by the story. Many were also inspired to make their own stories, many of which became very successful and inspiring others. My generation of anime fans considers the "Big Three" to be Naruto, One Piece, and Bleach. All of which were inspired by Dragon Ball. Stories outside of Japan were also inspired, albeit mainly with parody, and even now people have celebrated and are celebrating the series in their own ways. One may argue that newer manga stories are being inspired by other stories, but Dragon Ball will always be in their minds, I know it. In fact, Dragon Ball is the second top selling Japanese comic series, right under One Piece, which was inspired by it. That's how powerful the story was. It inspired and push others to be creative and improve themselves, much like how those around Goku sought to become stronger to match him.

For me, Dragon Ball is what kickstarted my love of writing. Shortly after discovering the series, I would tell my own stories using my action figures, which got my brain thinking about how I would write stories in general. I began to look at shows and movies and everything differently. It led me to meeting lifelong friends such as Nick and AJ, who would create stories with me with the same toys that we eventually shifted over into telling original stories with roleplaying. Same with my college friend Troy, who noticed my Dragon Ball Z wall scroll that I had in our dorm. We've been buddies ever since. I was also quite known for shoving Goku and Dragon Ball down the throats of my colleagues in the Sims machinima community, though I've since toned that down. During college was when Dragon Ball Z Kai began airing, and I developed a deeper love fore the series and I took in the original Japanese version and started reading the manga. I began to understand more of why it was so special. It is subtle and brilliant in how it blends tone and humor while making the characters realistic and natural. I think this is the reason why it caught on so well; Dragon Ball respects your intelligence as a reader and challenges you to pay attention while giving you juvenile entertainment and mature themes. As a lover of art and media, I have actively tried to find something I could love more than Dragon Ball. The only thing to ever come close to it is the Tales of Series, which is a story for another time. Even still, it couldn't hold a candle to Dragon Ball. Nothing can. Everything I take in, I compare to Dragon Ball on some level. Even my newfound interest in live action TV shows like Gilmore Girls and Cobra Kai came from Dragon Ball.

I have held back these feelings for years, but I will break my silence now: Dragon Ball is the greatest story I have ever read. It opened so many doors for me and awakened my life's purpose. I would not be who I am today without Dragon Ball. I would argue that even my ventures in other avenues and stories were affected by Dragon Ball in some way. That isn't to say that my whole world is nothing by Dragon Ball, but everything I do connects back to it in some way or form. That, I cannot and will not deny. My favorite video game series as a child was Mortal Kombat, which I returned to back in 2007 or so and have been a follower since. Same with TMNT, as I have gotten somewhat back into it with playing the new games, collecting some of the toys, and reading The Last Ronin. Both of these mirror how I fell in love with Dragon Ball, with the break period and the return. So it's even indirect connections. Much like how people connect Goku and Superman. That alone should say everything one would need to know about how powerful Dragon Ball is.

If you watched or read Dragon Ball as a child, I would suggest doing it again as an adult. You'll get more out of it, especially if you take in the original Japanese text. Lord knows that if I ever were to give a Masterclass on writing, Dragon Ball would be referenced many times. And I will do my best to honor it with my own stories, for Dragon Ball is what inspired my worlds.

Rest in powerful peace, Toriyama-sensei. Thank you so, so much for everything you gave me, even though you had no idea who I was. I will never forget you or your work and I will continue to sing praises on your masterpiece.
