The Australian government has recently approved a catastrophic offshore gas drilling project run by Woodside in the North West Shelf to operate until 2070. Not only is this a climate bomb which will release ten years of Australia's predicted climate pollution, it is also a risk to Scott Reef and marine life via offshore gas drilling in the Browse gas basin. The Karratha gas plant, created to process this gas is degrading a 50,000-year-old Indigenous rock art site of more than a million world heritage listed petroglyphs spread across the Burrup Peninsula.
Send the below email to your local Labor representative OR Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Minister for the Environment and Water Murray Watt, Minister for Indigenous Australians Malarndirri McCarthy, Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen etc.
To the Office of the Honourable (their name),
Hello, my name is (Your name), I am a (your occupation) living in (your state, electorate). I am writing to share my concern over your approving of Woodside's applications to extend the life of their gas project along the Northwest shelf from 2030 to 2070. Here are the reasons that I and many others are deeply worried about this destructive decision.
First, the gas that is being collected contributes, and will continue to contribute enormously to the climate crisis. There is decades of undeniable science backing the fact that climate change is real and caused by greenhouse gases released by fossil fuels. This project will unleash 4 billion tonnes of emissions over it's lifetime, making it Australia's second worst polluting fossil fuel facility. That is approximately ten years of Australia's emissions. The lifetime of this project will stretch twenty years after Australia's Net Zero emissions targets. The government must consider the scope three emissions of this detrimental project, as otherwise we will not be able to fulfill the true purpose of our shared goal, in line with the Paris Climate Agreement, to stop global warming below 2 degrees Celsius. Protecting amd preserving our planet is a matter of the healthy existence of all living things, not a diplomatic decision to pretend to adhere to create false hope and deflect negative attention. Australia must pull it's weight in removing fossil fuels from the global market!
Furthermore, this project will damage a site of incredible significance to the First Nations custodians of Murujuga. The Karratha gas processing plant, a large part of Woodside's project, is located close to a 50,000-year-old rock art site of more than a million world heritage listed petroglyphs spread across the Burrup Peninsula. The acidic air pollution caused by the Karratha gas plant is degrading this ancient rock art. Murujuga custodians have spoken out against the damage to their country, although an agreement from 22 years ago, between the group representing them and the Australian government blocks them from lodging objections to industrial projects on their land. Extending the life of this destructive facility, while blocking their right to legally object to industrial damage to their deeply sacred land is disrespectful and wrong.
This decision will also have a harsh affect on Scott Reef and the surrounding marine life. Another key part of this project is the Browse gas field off the Kimberley coast, the extraction of these monumental amounts of gas from under the seabed threatens to sink nesting areas for precious endangered turtles. Additionally, noise pollution from drilling gas wells in and around Scott Reef will impact Blue Pygmy Whales that migrate through and forage food for survival at Scott Reef.
We know that fossil fuel driven climate change leads to mass coral bleaching – putting this extremely destructive project next to a reef is adding insult to injury.
Please, (their name), do what is right and stop the extension of the lifetime of this catastrophic project. The rest of the future generations and I are relying on you. The future hangs in the balance – what side of history do you choose to be on?
Regards,
