Father’s Day is a complicated day for some of us.For me, it’s not about celebrating the man who helped create me—but about breaking the cycle he tried to trap me in.

Today, I honor the fathers who choose to protect, who show up with love, accountability, and integrity.
I honor the men raising children to feel safe in their own bodies, and the mothers doing both jobs when they have to.
I honor the men who choose to be a father figure in the lives of the children in their families, romantic relationships, and their communities.

To the survivors who wrestle with this day—your feelings are valid. You’re not ungrateful, broken, or bitter. You’re brave.

And to those of us rewriting the legacy of our lineage: I see you. I am you. And we are the change.

Cheers and a very #HappyFathersDay to the real ones!

Hearing the raw, unfiltered experiences of Cassie during her life with Diddy has a ball of grief sitting in my throat.
There are so many parallels between her experience, my experience with my father, and what I witnessed with my mother.

That being said, what infuriates me is people asking dumb questions like “why didn’t she just leave?”.
If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times—It takes a woman at least seven times to leave her abuser for various reasons, before succeeding.
One of them being, a woman who loves a man who is also abusing her doesn’t necessarily want to leave. She wants the abuse to stop.

It took years before I wanted my father to either stop existing or for me to get away from him completely. He was my father, and I still loved what I knew to be the good in him.

But wait, Cassie did try to leave, which brings me to another reason why it takes victims many attempts before getting away.

70% of intimate partner homicides are committed while the victim is trying to escape. Y’all saw the hotel video. It’s not about leaving, it’s about leaving SAFELY.

The frightening reality is that abusers and sexual predators aren’t just that. No person exists only behaving badly. Life would be much simpler if the monsters in our midst always acted like monsters. If that were so, we’d be able identify them easily, we’d never doubt our instincts, and they couldn’t manipulate anyone.

Praying for shields of protection over Cassie and everyone who is testifying against this madman.

I made sure I put on some denim before heading to the gym. Even small gestures can lead to big change.

I felt compelled to bring some of my masculine energy to the forefront. I confess, my excitement for this year’s #metgala theme “The Black Dandy” played a role in this #outfitoftheday but I’ve also been working on being more assertive in my leadership positions. So, for a Black History Month event I attended, I channeled civil rights activist and co-founder of the Black Panther Party, Huey P. Newton.

I am proud to be a very feminine woman. However, balance to me means having the ability to effectively use masculine energy to support, protect, and assert your feminine energy. When you do that, you get sh*t done.

It's giving opulence. It's giving Harlem Nights. It’s giving #blackexcellence. It's giving modern Josephine Baker. It’s giving lady in red having a blast at the #AfricanAmericanChamberofCommerce awards gala.

I hope you all are having a wonderful holiday season. I didn’t take many pictures this year. I was too busy enjoying being in the moment and actually forgot to pull out my camera. However, I did snap some pics of some cookies and my girls. I’ll see y’all in the new year!
