@MikeWinger inspired me today to post this. I wade into pretty contentious waters at times on my channel, my last video about slavery and the Bible is a good example. The deconstructionists were in love with the comment section on that one. I’ve never felt so important as self-proclaimed scholars ran to attack the view that the God of the Old Testament was actually a benevolent force for good. I guess hearing oneself rant is a favorite pastime these days, I’m a big fan myself. But things like that make me wonder at times about the redemptive value of the comment section or if responding to those comments is really worth it. My views continue to evolve on this because the way people drop all sense of credibility the moment a screen blocks them from the face of another person is pretty interesting. I’ve been tempted at times to moderate the comment section because of this. I actually think some big accounts do moderate.
I’ve landed where Mike has:
if you’re being a total ass I’ll remove your comment, sometimes. I’ll also let it ride to expose the readers to people who act that way.
I’ll never remove your comment simply because you disagree with me.
If your comment is gone it may be the algorithm. I’ve had that happen before. It may be because your language does not meet YouTube guidelines and they’ll yank it without me even knowing.
In summation, the comment section is a constant reminder of the world we live in. I think it’s a good mirror for your soul. If you’re pompous in the comment section you’re probably that way to your co-workers, kids, or spouse. The vitriol online can be disappointing but it also can be a good reminder of the need we all have for God to reform our hearts and minds.
