Hi lover of singing,
Many singing students who come to me are afraid of singing— on stage or even in their own homes. They worry that their neighbours will overhear them.
That was me once, too. As a teenager, I only sang in empty bus stations. The fear of someone hearing my voice was unbearable, paralysing. I did everything to avoid at all cost someone hearing me. But the urge to sing was equally powerful.
When I turned 21, something happened that changed everything. I realised that I could no longer be a little mouse. I had to overcome my anxiety and sing.
This revelation came after my first singing lesson. My teacher encouraged me to explore and express my voice—something I had never allowed myself to do.
Afterward, I was exhilarated. As I ran home, high on dopamine and adrenaline, I realised this feeling was the same as when I had my first kiss. I discovered that singing was my true love.
Fast forward twenty years, and as a singing teacher, I often get approached by candidate students in their 50s, 60s, or even 70s. They tell me, "I've avoided singing all my life, but I can't wait any longer."
And I agree with them—your love for singing won’t fade. It’s time to stop postponing your dream.
Does this resonate?

There are vocal exercises that work for most people, and there are some that are very peculiar to certain people, so as a vocal coach I need to do some detective work. (Exercises of the first kind I will reveal in my upcoming free Live-saving vocal exercises webinar, Sunday. October 1st)

As a singing student, you might think the goal is to sing pretty. But what if I told you that the key to finding your voice is to start making 'ugly' sounds? Starting to sing ugly will lead to your vocal breakthrough, your true voice. It's a mind switch to allow 'wrong' sounds to come out. The fear of sounding bad. I will teach you to get over the fear AND it will lead to the best vocal technique and, ironically, to the most beautiful sounds.
See, there is something off about the traditional way of vocal coaching. It's the false assumption that only solid vocal technique will lead to enjoying your singing. And so, the singing teacher jumps straight at technical issues.
I flip this on its head: I begin with removing mental blockages, so singing becomes fun. In parallel, I work on vocal technique. In a systematic way, one issue at a time, to avoid overwhelm. And so singing practice always stays fun and effective.
