TAIJI CIRCLING HANDS (TAI CHI RULER)
WORKSHOP SERIES
Begins Sunday, March 17, 2:30-5:30 PM ET
The Arlington Center, 369 Mass Ave., Arlington, MA 02474
And online over Zoom.

I know it’s fun watching the video, but if you’d like to actually learn how to do Taiji Circling Hands, here’s your opportunity!

Taiji Circling Hands is a simple single-movement qigong with a wide range of health benefits. Its gentle circular patterns effectively release tension from your spine and nervous system, producing a calm, focused awareness while relieving various joint, spine and whole body aches.
Combined with the included Daoist Breathing, more qi, the energy of life, will be directed to your internal organs for optimal functioning and healing, while increasing overall vitality.

Providing many of the health benefits of a more complex taiji (tai chi) form, Taiji Circling Hands is excellent for beginners, and may be used as a stand-alone qigong practice, as preparation or support for more advanced qigongs, as an introduction to taiji, and as enhancement to a current taiji practice.

You can see a demonstration of the basic Circling Hands practice here:
https://youtu.be/QPHSFB4v9Hs

***Full details, including enrollment information, may be found here: www.healingdragon.org/classes-and-workshops

Registration is requested no later than March 10. Your tuition reserves your place in this workshop.
All classes are recorded, so both in-person and online students will get links to the video for online viewing or download. This will both remind you of and allow you to practice along with everything we cover in each class.

Dragon & Tiger Medical Qigong
A hybrid class in Arlington, MA and online over Zoom
Begins Sunday, February 11, 2-5 PM ET

Take control of your health and awaken your body’s innate healing wisdom with this 1,500-year-old medical qigong practice. Incorporating Daoist and Buddhist principles, its powerful yet gentle seven movements address all the internal organs and main energy pathways to help you build complete health while boosting your immune system, reducing stress, increasing energy, and promoting emotional balance and mental clarity. You will learn to feel your qi, the vital energy of life, and to discharge stagnant qi, which is the root cause of pain, illness and most degenerative diseases. At more advanced levels of practice, Dragon & Tiger is a gateway to deeper spiritual cultivation.

As February 10th begins the year of the Wood Dragon, this is a particularly auspicious time to begin, return to or continue a qigong practice. While the energy of the Dragon is supportive of all qigongs, it will especially favor Dragon and Tiger Medical Qigong. Dragon and Tiger effectively addresses the health of the whole body, but as one of the two dominant energies in that practice, the Dragon is associated with the Lungs and specifically strengthens their functions. In this season of increasingly prevalent respiratory illnesses, improving natural immunity by strengthening the Lungs is more important than ever.

THE WU STYLE TAIJI (TAI CHI) SHORT FORM

A HYBRID CLASS, in person and online
Beginning Sunday, October 22, 2-5 PM ET

I’m very pleased to announce the launch of my first ever live/Zoom hybrid workshop series, Wu Taiji (Tai Chi) Short Form. Wherever you are in the world, this is your opportunity to get deep instruction in this wonderful practice.

The Wu Short Form is suitable for people of all ages, level of health and fitness, and for complete beginners and experienced students alike. Once learned, the entire form can be performed in just five minutes.

KNOWN BENEFITS
While both a martial art and a healing art, we will primarily be focusing on its health building aspects.

Often described as a moving meditation and likened to “swimming on dry land”, taiji is highly regarded for its ability to foster harmony among body, mind, and spirit, reduce stress, and promote a healthy longevity.

Western research has proved that taiji improves balance, maintains bone density, increases flexibility and cardiovascular and respiratory function, and boosts the immune system, among its many other health benefits.

Long known to support healthy aging, newer research has verified that taiji reinvigorates stem cells, one mechanism through which it facilitates healing and increases longevity.

CONTENT AND PROGRESSION
• You’ll be carefully guided through the intricacies of each posture in the form.
• You’ll learn supplementary exercises (Ji Ben Gong, Basic Foundation Work) to build a strong foundation, more quickly improve health, and clarify the subtleties within each movement, gradually revealing the hidden neigong (internal work) that makes taiji such a powerful practice.
• For in-person students, partner exercises provide kinesthetic feedback that will assist you to more fully and accurately embody each movement.
• As you progress, you’ll be introduced to taiji’s four main energies (Four Jings) and will learn to feel your qi with increasing clarity and confidence as it manifests in your practice.

FOR ONLINE STUDENTS
You’ll be able to observe all the live interactions for deeper insight than you would ordinarily get in an online training. If your home practice space allows me to see your whole body in motion, you’ll get direct personal feedback as I observe you for a part of each class meeting. Although Q & A will be a part of every class for live and zoom students alike, for the first few months I’ll schedule a free monthly half hour zoom group Q & A, probably on a weekday early evening, in case there are things you could not clearly observe or understand during class time. If that proves especially useful, I’ll continue that indefinitely.

ALL CLASSES WILL BE RECORDED, so both in-person and online students will get links to the video for online viewing or download. This will both remind you of and allow you to practice along with everything we covered in each class.

SWIMMING DRAGON QIGONG
A One-Day Online Workshop
Sunday, July 30, 2-6 PM ET

Swimming Dragon is a three-movement Daoist qigong set that anyone can do. In this four-hour workshop you’ll learn the entire core practice, additional beginning and ending movements, warm-up exercises that gently open the associated muscle-tendon meridians, and a seated meditation to settle and absorb the generated qi. Supplementary exercises are included to enhance the benefits of the core practice.

Swimming Dragon is a very popular practice, largely due to its simplicity and effectiveness, as well as its being marketed to westerners as good for weight loss and sexual energy. Those features are just a small part of what you can expect from this qigong set, as its health benefits are numerous and far-reaching.

Like a dragon swimming through the sea, its graceful, sinuous side-to-side movements open the spine laterally, something rarely found in other qigong practices. These movements specifically unify and circulate qi among the three dantians, harmonizing their functional energies. Additionally:

1. By balancing the endocrine system, it:
• improves sexual energy, increases fertility, and normalizes menstrual disorders.
• counteracts metabolism problems that cause weight gain.
• boosts the production of hormones, slowing the aging process and easing menopausal symptoms.
• benefits the skin, making it more supple and reducing the appearance of wrinkles.

2, The lateral shifting of the hips, torso and neck:
• opens the low back, spine and neck, reducing pain and benefitting every joint in the body.
• releases low back restriction, increasing qi flow in the lower front of the torso, benefitting the bladder, ovaries, uterus, prostate, testicles, and inguinal lymph glands.
• tones the waist, hips, and pelvic region.
• benefits the kidneys and the entire urogenital system, addressing many urogenital disorders.
• increases blood circulation and strengthens the immune system.
• releases tension in the ribs and abdomen, benefitting respiration.

3, Other energetic benefits include:
• opening the Daimai, increasing communication among all meridians and stimulating the abdominal organs, improving digestive and eliminative functions.
• harmonizing yin and yang qi, promoting internal balance and homeostasis.
• opening the Gall Bladder and Liver meridians along the sides of the waist and legs.

This workshop is for:
• people new to qigong who want a simple yet comprehensive and authentic introduction to the world of qigong.
• experienced qigong students wanting more tools for their health, energy and longevity, especially useful on days when they may not have time for longer, more complex practices.
• anyone wanting to improve their health with an easy practice that can be done beneficially for as little as 5 minutes per day, and optimally in about 20 minutes.

***Tuition is discounted for early registration by July 16!

Daoist Breathing for Health, Longevity and Meditation
Beginning Sunday, March 5, online.

Breathing is fundamental to life, to all qigongs, and to deeper spiritual and meditative practices. Most of us give it no thought as it happens spontaneously, 24 hours a day. Since we can also control this automatic, largely unconscious process, it becomes a unique avenue into increasingly subtle aspects of our being, influencing our internal organs, cardiovascular system, nervous system, emotional well-being, and consciousness itself.

Part 1, Daoist Natural Breathing

In Part 1 of this series, you’ll learn the core Daoist breathing practice. You’ll achieve numerous health benefits long known to Daoists and now recognized by contemporary western medical science, including:

• increased energy
• decompression of the spine, reducing back pain
• a strengthened immune system
• improved mood and emotional balance
• a lowered risk of cancer, stroke, heart disease, neurodegenerative and other diseases, all linked to hypoxia (sub-optimal oxygenation).

Part 2, Transforming Breath to Qi

In Part 2, we’ll deepen everything in Part 1, and introduce how breath becomes a bridge to qi. Some of the practices taught include:

• Slowing and lengthening the breath.
This can be used to sequentially rejuvenate the internal organs, the nervous system, and ultimately the glandular system. This is one of the most important ways breath is used to dramatically increase healthy longevity.

• Daoist Yoga and breathing.
Learn to release unconscious held tension and more deeply open the internal organs, laying the groundwork for transforming breath to qi.

• Breathing through the Five Extremities.
This begins the process of transforming breath to qi.

• Breathing into the internal organs and the brain.
This is a significant deepening of breathing into the organs learned in Part 1. As breath is transformed into qi, it’s used to directly influence fluids throughout the body, including blood, lymph, interstitial fluid, synovial fluid, and cerebrospinal fluid. An important step in optimizing the health and functionality of the internal organs and other body tissues.

This workshop series begins on Sunday, March 5. Early registration is recommended.

QIGONG 2022: MAKE IT YOUR HEALTHIEST YEAR EVER!

Have more energy and enthusiasm, less stress, emotional calm, mental clarity, and a robust longevity while enriching your life in ways you might not even imagine yet. Learn to work directly with your vital life energy (qi) and take control of your health.

Each of my online qigong courses will help you achieve those goals and more, guiding you from the very beginning of the practice in a clear, detailed and methodical way, through progressively advanced levels as your skill grows. Even in the earliest stages, you’ll enjoy obvious health benefits while on the path to connecting with increasingly subtle and profound aspects of your being.

For decades, I’ve trained in these time-honored treasures and made them a part of my daily life. The benefits I’ve experienced have been wonderful, enduring and life-changing. I look forward to sharing these methods and helping you achieve the same outstanding results for yourself.

WORKSHOP SCHEDULE
Workshops meet for one three-hour Zoom session each month, from 2-5 PM ET on a Saturday or Sunday. The start date for these classes is mainly up to you. Let me know which course(s) you are interested in by using the Contact Form on my website, www.healingdragon.org. I’ll put you on the Wait List for that class, and we’ll begin as soon as there are enough people ready to go! A video of each class will be available for download, yours to keep forever. All courses are suitable for beginners and everyone is welcome.

• CHINESE SELF-CARE EXERCISES
This is the easiest workshop series and takes the least amount of time. Each of these simple healing exercises can be learned quickly and performed in a minute or two by people of all ages, levels of experience and current state of health. The exercises may be combined to target particular health concerns, or used as a general wellness practice. An instructional DVD is available for extra support.
Samples of Chinese Self-Care Exercises: https://youtu.be/BVQrcuDhKsw

• DRAGON AND TIGER MEDICAL QIGONG
This seven-movement form has a strong medical, health-building focus, with both Daoist and Buddhist influences. By learning to work with the energy of your qi body (etheric field), you’ll move more healing qi through the meridians within your body, increasing the functional energy of your organs, glands and other body tissues. At more advanced levels, Dragon and Tiger awakens your spiritual energies for deeper cultivation. In China, Dragon and Tiger has been used to treat cancer and other degenerative diseases.

• ENERGY GATES QIGONG
Train your mind to penetrate your body and sense and release energetic obstructions through the core Daoist neigong (inner cultivation) of zhan zhuang, sometimes referred to as standing meditation. Maintain and deepen that awareness while opening and energizing your body physically and engendering a calm clarity on emotional and mental levels through the moving practices contained in the Energy Gates set: Cloud Hands, The Three Arm Swings, and the Daoist Spine Stretch.

• CLOUD HANDS QIGONG
Cloud Hands is included within the Energy Gates qigong set and in all taiji (tai chi) forms, and is taught in much greater detail in this workshop series. It contains most of the principles used in taiji, and layers in progressively deeper neigong as one advances, rarely taught in the Western world, making it an extremely rich and powerful single movement practice. You can get many of the health benefits of a full taiji practice in this single movement qigong.

• TAIJI RULER/CIRCLING HANDS QIGONG
The gentle circular movements of Circling Hands are particularly beneficial to your back and nervous system, allowing you to effortlessly release held tension. The vertical circles stimulate qi flow through the Microcosmic Orbit, and provide a solid foundation for more advanced qigongs such as The Marriage of Heaven and Earth. The later diagonal, horizontal and coronal circles are contained in all taiji forms and enhance the benefits of Circling Hands. With more experience, you’ll learn to absorb environmental qi to nourish your internal organs, infusing them with healing energy while discharging stagnant qi for cleansing and detoxification.

Additional details about these and other classes can be found on my website. Private instruction is available for any course. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Hi Everyone!

I'm teaching a special winter workshop on Saturday, Dec. 11. Discounts available if you enroll by November 27.

Preserving Original Essence:
An Online Winter Workshop to Fortify and Nourish the Kidneys

Winter is almost here, a time when the Water element flourishes and the energy of the season aligns with and supports the energy of the kidneys. Now is when the yin kidneys, along with their yang counterpart, the urinary bladder, may be most advantageously addressed to improve health and optimize their many functions and attributes.

One quality of Water is storage, a gathering of all the preceding energetic phases of growth and development occurring throughout the year and throughout the arc of our life. It requires a quiet, still inward focus to most fully absorb and store, replenishing us at the deepest levels of our being, while preparing us for the next cycle of growth beginning with the emerging energy of Spring.

Storage also refers to the kidneys’ storage of our original, pre-birth essence, kidney jing (a yin substance that contains the energy of yang qi). Inherited from our parents, we have a finite amount of original essence. It can be depleted either quickly, causing more rapid aging with associated health problems, or slowly, allowing us to age gracefully, with abundant energy and few ailments. Depletion of kidney essence directly causes all of the common signs and symptoms of aging.

In this half-day online workshop, you’ll learn four separate, interrelated Daoist life cultivation approaches to conserve original jing and replenish post-natal jing, strengthen kidney functions, open the kidney and urinary bladder meridians to enhance internal Water element qi flows, and generate internal stillness with a focus on storage in the kidneys. When combined, in addition to improving physical and energetic health, these practices smooth and harmonize the energies of your emotional and mental bodies. They will also lower your level of stress, one of the most common ways jing and qi are depleted on a daily basis.

(Note: If you’d like to learn more about the kidneys and Jing essence right now, read the kidney section in Chapter Five of my book, Chinese Holistic Medicine In Your Daily Life.)

Here are the topics covered in this workshop.

Part 1. Chinese Self-Care and Meridian Exercises
These address the more exterior part of kidney health, opening up the kidney and urinary bladder muscle-tendon meridians to allow for the free flow of qi through the more superficial parts of our body. This releases physical restrictions, relieves many aches and discomforts, and sets the stage for fuller access to deeper qi flows.

Part 2. Herbal Formulas Supporting Kidney Yin, Yang, and Essence
Yin and Essence are substances, and in order to effectively nourish them quickly and easily, supportive herbal nutrition should be included daily as a sort of “super food” for Kidney health.

2A. Special Topic For Women: Nutrition for Osteoporosis

2B. Special Topic For Men: Nutrition for Prostate Health

Part 3. Nourishing Original Essence:
A three-phase daoyin/qigong practice to guide qi to the kidneys and urinary bladder, through their related acupuncture meridians.

Part 4. Kidney Healing Meditation
This profoundly restful and restorative meditation unifies everything learned in the first three parts of the workshop.
