On 3 Dec 1447, the 8th Ottoman sultan Bayezid II was born in Demotika, nowdays Didymoteicho, Greece who consolidated Ottoman rule in the Balkans, Anatolia, and the eastern Mediterranean and was the first Ottoman sultan challenged by the spread of the Safavid Empire of Persia π€΄π»β¨
When his father Fatih Sultan Mehmet II died in May 1481, Bayezid II ascended the throne in Istanbul as the oldest son of the deceased sultan but at same his brother Cem claimed the throne in Bursa, thus Bayezid called his army back from Otranto in Italy in order to fight his brother π‘οΈ
As a result his brother Cem lost the battle and sought refuge in Egypt, then Rhodes, and finally France. He lived in exile for 14 years until his death in 1495 on his journey to Italy, where he was buried. Cem's body was returned to Ottoman territory in 1499, four years after his death, and buried next to his brother, Εehzade Mustafa, at the Muradiye mosque in Bursa π€²π»β¨
Bayezid II spent most of his reign fighting his brother Cem and the Mamluk Sultanate. His first campaign was to Morava in 1482, and his second to Bogdan in 1484. (Between Moldavia and Romania today). Between 1484 and 1495, he fought many battles against the Mamluks, but lost the majority of them. In 1499 and 1500, he battled against the Republic of Venice, seizing the entire Balkan regions. Hungary and Bosnia also had successful war π‘οΈ
Sultan Bayezid II despatched his Navy in 1492 to transfer the Jewish population who had been banished from Spain safely to the Ottoman borders.π
After beginning of 15 century, the shahs of Persiaβs (nowdays Δ°ran ) Safavid Order declared war on the Ottoman Empire and launched operations into Anatolia. Bayezid II did not respond strongly to this command, but his son, Yavuz Sultan Selim (Selim I), the governor of Trabzon at the time, seized the initiative and destroyed the Safavids in Georgia and Azerbaijan π‘οΈ
Bayezid II had to contend with a series of severe earthquakes that devastated central and northern Anatolia, as well as Istanbul and Edirne, in September 1509. This was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Ottoman territory, with the highest death toll and destruction. The Sultan directed that these destroyed cities be rebuilt and restored ποΈ
During the final years of Sultan Bayezid IIβs reign, his sons waged war against each other for power and the throne, destabilising the Ottoman Empire. Bayezid Han recognised the risk of his Empire disintegrating, thus in April 1512 he decided to abdicate and hand over the kingdom to his son Ahmet first. When the Jannisseries revolted, Bayezid was forced to hand over power to his other son, Selim I, who was regarded as the most capable ruler of the Ottoman Empire π€΄π»
Bayezid II was on his way to his hometown in Edirne after abdicating the throne, but he died on the way on May 26, 1512. His mausoleum is now housed in Istanbul's Beyazit mosque. π€²π»
