🚀 New Ultimate Guide Drops Next Week! 🚀
After a full month of testing, writing, and editing… my biggest and most complete guide ever is almost here. Over 1 hour long, it covers everything you need to know to master starships in No Man’s Sky.
Starships are your lifeline, your weapon, your flying mount - and your identity. Whether you're hunting pirates, crossing galaxies, or building your dream fleet, they’re at the heart of the game.
But how well do you really know them?
How do you judge the best core stats? What's the most efficient supercharged slot layout? And how can you reliably solo-find the top Exotics, Organics, or Sentinel Interceptors?
In this guide, we’ll break down every starship type, explain what class bonuses and damage stats actually mean, and help you choose the right first S-class ship - without relying on luck or YouTube myths.
You'll learn how to unlock their full potential, discover hidden mechanics, and finally understand what makes a top-tier starship top tier. From using the Starship Fabricator for the rarest builds to recruiting Sentinels, Organics, and Exotics to your squadron - it’s all in here.
And yes, I’ll reveal my full 2025 starship tier list - ranking every type using exclusive criteria built just for this guide, backed by over 1,000 hours of experience. Dropping next week - and it might just be the most complete starship guide ever made. Who’s ready? 💥
P.S. Let me know in the comments: What’s YOUR favorite starship type and why?
Can’t wait to see how your favorites match up with my top-tier picks 😉
Guide Progression Update
Hey everyone, just a quick update - I'm currently facing some unexpected technical issues with capturing footage for the upcoming video at the quality I was aiming for.
The latest version of DaVinci Resolve (video editing software) was recently released, and it required updated drivers. Unfortunately, after installing them, I started experiencing strange artifacts and visual glitches in-game, which are preventing me from recording proper footage. I’m not sure yet whether this is due to the driver update or the recent Beacon update, which introduced a lot of bugs and instability.
This has significantly slowed down the video production process, and as a result, I won’t be able to release the video this week as I had originally planned. I'm still working hard to get it out as soon as possible.
Apologies to everyone who was looking forward to the release this week - I really appreciate your patience. I’ve invested a lot into this guide, and I want to make sure it’s the best it can be, which means I can’t use broken or low-quality footage.
Thanks again for your understanding and support!

A First Look at a Fully Upgraded S-Class Planetary Settlement in the Beacon Update
I’ve fully upgraded my previously owned Gek settlement to S-class with all buildings maxed out and wanted to share the most useful tips and tricks with my fellow crew.
Before the Beacon update, I had a fully upgraded A-class settlement - but after the update, it was downgraded to B-class. Luckily, it only took me a few days to bring it up to S-class. So what do you get with a fully upgraded settlement in this update, and what should you expect?
Notable Features in my Gek agricultural settlement (with nano farms):
• Fishing Pod - lets you fish directly within the settlement.
• Starship Outfitting Terminal - added to landing pads, just like the ones in space stations. Lets you upgrade or scrap starships.
• Nutrient Processor - located in the bar.
• Galactic Trade Terminal - available in the market building. However, there's currently no trade NPC or Guild envoy as advertised by the devs (likely a bug).
• Tower Calibration Terminal - located on top of the water tower allowing to:
* Scan for planetary buildings (A-class) - it found a Transmission Tower for me.
* Scan for Space Anomalies (S-class) - works like a standard anomaly scanner, but it’s free.
Upgrading my settlement to S-class also increased the system economy from 1-star to 2-star.
My S-class Settlement Stats:
• Population: 188/188 (Max)
• Happiness: 74%
• Productivity: ~1 million units/day
• Maintenance: ~550k units/day
Known Issues & Limitations:
• Historical Records are currently bugged and don’t reflect the real status of your settlement.
• Settler Personalities are meaningless for now - just random traits like those for squadron pilots.
• No new Sentinel attacks post-update so far; alert level rises much slower (currently 30%).
• Custom Resource Production is mostly useless for veterans. For example, producing a Cryogenic Chamber (Tier 4 item for Stasis Devices) takes 22 real-world days. Completely impractical if you already have an established farm.
And the most anticipated feature - purchasing Multi-Tools from factories - is missing in my settlement. I’m not sure if it’s a bug, or if I made a poor building choice before the Beacon update. I went with 2 bars to boost settler happiness instead of factories, so now my settlers party every night in two discos… and seem very happy with the outcome 😄
Upgrade Strategy & New Restrictions:
New players who haven't completed the main storyline or certain key quests won’t be able to fully upgrade their settlement to S-class. That’s because many buildings now require rare materials found only in purple star systems. You either need access to those systems or must ask other players at the Space Anomaly to share them with you.
Also, you can only upgrade one building at a time, and you have to wait for the upgrade + fireworks ceremony before upgrading the next. What’s worse - while one building is upgrading, you can’t preview what materials are needed for others.
Some upgrades require rare trade goods, but the game only shows their names - no icons, no sourcing info. So be prepared to Google what they are, just like I did (tip: check wealthy economies for them).
Real-Time Cooldowns (for efficiency planning):
Here are the real cooldown timers I observed for each building’s upgrade process:
2 hours:
• Deluxe Habitation Unit
• Specialty Trade Hub
• Palatial Dwelling (Upgrade from A to S requires 300 Polished Stone)
1 hour:
• Landing Pads
• Multi-Dimensional Storeroom (Upgrade from A to S requires 250 Crystallized Helium)
• Filtration Tower (Upgrade from A to S requires 250 Lithium)
• Autonomous Storage Facility (Upgrade from A to S requires 250 Crystallized Helium)
• Luxury Bar
46 minutes 40 seconds (funny timer):
• Luxury Dwelling
20 minutes:
• Sleeping Pods
• Advanced Habitation Unit
• Wireless Distribution Hub
• Atomic Generator
• Advanced Sleeping Unit (Pod)
• Techno Pod
• Luxury Habitation Pod
I hope this helps set realistic expectations and lets you plan your upgrades more efficiently!
9 June Update:
Patch 5.71 is now available for PC GOG players and fixes the main issues. You can now claim new settlements and start building and upgrading them. Hopefully, the issue has been resolved on all other platforms as well.

What Should My Crew Members Know About the Latest NMS Beacon Update?
A new update for No Man’s Sky is out today.
First impressions: it’s a minor update compatible with the Relics update, focused on enhancing planetary settlements. Don’t be misled by the file size - at least on PC - since Hello Games usually delivers the entire game package regardless of the actual number of changes.
This update finally improves what was previously one of the weakest mechanics in NMS: planetary settlements. There are now more features, deeper statistics, new types of buildings, and more meaningful progression. Players can now own up to 4 different settlements. A new settlement type has also been introduced - Autophage settlements - with their own unique architecture, in addition to the existing 3 race-specific styles: Gek, Korvax, and Vy’keen.
If you already owned a settlement before the update, it will likely be downgraded. Mine, for example, was an A-class fully maxed-out settlement, and after the update it was downgraded to B-class.
You’ll receive a new quest at your current settlement that leads you to an Autophage settlement nearby (mine was on a neighboring planet in the same system). Head there, claim it, and begin building and upgrading.
Now, each building can be individually upgraded to S-class via terminals located near each functional structure. However, the upgrade system includes cooldown timers that likely depend on the building type. For instance, I upgraded the Overseer’s Office from B to S-class in 5 minutes, but the next building required a 2-hour real-time wait, which then applied to all upgrades. All upgrades must now be manually claimed and are celebrated with fireworks, which is a fun new detail.
You can also choose a custom resource for your settlement to produce, based on its class. A convenient addition for new players.
Your settlement can now be attacked by various types of enemies, including a mini-boss fight against the Vile Insect Queen and her brood, making settlement battles more fun and diverse.
Builders will also be happy to find brand-new Autophage-style base construction parts. There are 3 new pages of items to unlock at the Space Anomaly. They’re quite affordable - most require only 1-2 Salvaged Data per piece, plus some Atlantideum. Several new types of construction materials have also been added.
Player vocalizations - such as breathing or exertion sounds while running - can now be customized with several different voice types, varying in pitch and character.
And last but not least, No Man’s Sky is now available for Nintendo Switch 2 players - congrats to the new explorers!
That’s basically it. For full details, please check the official patch notes. I just wanted to share my practical insights and thoughts with you. As always, don’t expect too much from a smaller update - but have fun experimenting with the improved settlement system and new building parts!
Updated:
If you didn’t previously own a settlement or don’t like the Autophage settlement the game assigned you - like I didn’t, since mine was on a toxic planet - there is a way to get an Autophage settlement on a different planet. To do this, purchase a Planetary Chart for Autophage settlements from any Autophage Synthesis Terminal for 1,500 Void Motes (the Autophage currency). Then, go to a system of your choice and activate the chart anywhere. It will direct you to the nearest planet with an Autophage settlement, if one exists (new settlements were added to all inhabited planets). If you don’t like the location, simply reload your restore point and repeat the process until you find one that suits you.

A great video by @GoodGuysFree covering possible reasons behind Sean Murray’s (lead of No Man’s Sky) unusual tweet activity - most likely related to the delay of the update that was supposed to land today. watch video on watch page
