30 years ago...
Our next stop was an elementary school in Watervliet, a small town approximately twenty miles away from the farm. We were invited by Arleneās son Rickie to visit his class and give a presentation about Russia. To my surprise, I didnāt feel nervous at all. I guess two months among the Chicago youngsters gave me proper training.
The visit went very well and took way longer than anyone expected. Rickie was beaming with pride presenting his āRussian friends,ā he was so cute! We shared stories about childrenās lives in the Soviet Union and answered countless questions. Andrei stirred excitement by showing off the Russian nesting doll Matreshka while I was writing the Russian alphabet on the blackboard. Next, we did some singing and dancing to Andreiās guitar. Everyone had a great time! Finally, we all went outside and played some Russian football that strangely was called soccer here, in America.
