Greetings everyone. I hope you're doing well. I've decided to go back to my playlists.

Here's the first one: "Music Videos - 1980"
www.youtube.com/playlist?list...

It's been a long time since I've created a new public playlist. That's why, maybe just once, I also want to explain this all a bit further and it'll be a long one... Creating some great playlists was the whole reason why I started this channel anyway. It quickly went beyond the Rush playlist, which I created first just for my own enjoyment.

Making a long playlist, like the "1980s Music Videos ( 1980 to 1985 )" was a big project back in the day.
www.youtube.com/playlist?list...

I'm glad that some people have enjoyed that one. I realized that it already had 172924 views. Now many of those videos don't exist anymore and it would take a long time to replace all of them. (I don't even know what some of them were because it only says "deleted video" or "private video". They've probably been removed because of copyright.) When the playlist is very long It also becomes hard to place the videos in the correct spot based on their release date.

That's one of the reasons why I've decided to focus on one year at a time. I try to go for the releases on the official channels but sometimes the sound on these older videos is clearly much worse than on the album and monophonic for example. Some unofficial releases can be much better if they're still available. I also found some real gems that I didn't even know existed, like some Ultravox and especially a couple of Saga videos. Saga is one of those very talented Canadian bands, like Rush and Triumph etc.

I really wanted to add some songs but it turned out they were from 1979 or 1981. So, they'll go to another playlist. I will also add more songs later but I won't add everything I find. I still always include music from many genres. Some of those genres aren't really my cup of tea but I still like and appreciate those songs. They can have some really great songwriting, sounds and production.

The order is based on the release dates but it's often impossible to find the date when a video was released. That's why I usually go for the single release date if available. (On some rare cases an official music video exists but it wasn't a single.) If the singles were released on the same day, then I'll choose the order by the album release date. I often have to depend on the information on Wikipedia even if that might be a bit wrong. Discogs is quite good but they seem to always list the releases of the same year alphabetically. Sometimes if you're very lucky they might have the complete date of the single releases but that's quite rare. I also remember hearing some of these song on the radio when I was a kid. It was very likely back in 1980 but I just can't remember what month... My memory isn't that good. :-)

Just to be clear, I will only include videos that were made in the same year. The Spirit of Radio by Rush got an official video after Neil Peart had passed away. That could've been the only exception but I still left it out. Please go and listen to that one if you haven't heard the song before... or listen to it anyway.

When I listen to these songs I realize how imaginative and timeless they sound. The use of unusual effects and synthesizers are quite prominent on many genres of music. You also had to design those sounds yourself. It was still rare to have preset sounds and many bands were using analog synthesizers, like the ARP Odyssey. Some of these sounds and styles were new back then but they still sound new to me. Well, listen to the songs yourself. It might be a different experience for you. Some Motörhead or AC/DC might be a nice change of pace. ;-) Those bands made a few of their best known songs in 1980 and Judas Priest really went for it as well. They were more creative in the 1970s but not very successful, just like many other bands. So, British Steel was just the album they needed to make. Anyway, I just like the variation. Enjoy!

P.S. A couple of notes. I can't add a comment for every song anymore. I used to add the release dates or some other thoughts about every song when I started making these playlists. Now I can't even add a new paragraph for the description of the playlist. Line breaks aren't supported. I've used YouTube for a long time and they keep on reducing options for the user. Well, maybe it's more optimized for smart phones these days. I will still use my computer.

Another thing... I've removed the use of advertising on my channel settings but it only means the actual videos that I publish myself. Copyrighted material will still sometimes have them. It made me sad to find out that my "Rush - The Sphere" video has advertising as well. I recommend using Adblock Plus and a program called "Enhancer for YouTube". It's available as an add-on for Firefox at least. They used to work perfectly but now the adverts are showing anyway, at least the first picture of them, for a short while. Luckily their sound doesn't play. You just need to wait for a few seconds. This still happened to me once: Two adverts played the whole way through during this playlist when the videos were full screen. Just to let you know. I have no way to prevent that from happening.

Oh, and you can't select a specific video as a picture for the playlist anymore. You could upload a picture, which is nice, but currently it's the face of Debbie Harry. Not too bad.

Enjoy the music. It's a gift that keeps on giving.

Songs with a truly positive vibe for you. I was inspired by the new Nightwish album. That was one of the reasons why I added these songs to the list. How's the heart? I hope you are feeling well.

Here are some real classics and even a couple of forgotten gems from a few quite well-known and groundbreaking bands. These songs can feel heavy and momentous, beautiful or just really fun to listen to. Songs by Accept are from 1981. All the other songs are from the 1970s... believe it or not.

I am Music. I'm always there to comfort you. Take my hand and walk with me. Remember: "I'm smiling next to you".

From the "Endless Dream":

"So take your time
Look round and see
The most in time is where you're meant to be
For you are light
Inside your dreams
For you will find that it's something
That touches me."
