The hearts are turning out a little more inconsistent than i had in mind, and there are certainly more of them than on the original- but hell, itâs kinda growing on me theyâre hand painted and they look like they weređ¤ˇââď¸- i mean, you cannot tell me that Bridget isnât the type of person to just start painting on her clothes because she was bored lol

I recently saw an old tumblr post that reminded me of something: the way Yana Toboso wrote Grelle changed quite a bit from her first appearance to her most recent . Obviously, he out of universe explanation is that Yana likely realized how many transphobic tropes the way Grelle was portrayed had fit into, and changed some things to more closely fit her original intention. Like- reminder, it was 2007-2008 when those chapters introducing her were written. And her most recent appearance was in 2017-2018
But I havenât seen anyone talking about in in universe explanation for her character development- so here are my thoughts-
TW for mentions of murder, suicide, and historical attitudes.
Grelle is introduced as Angelinaâs accomplice in the murders, and she is incredibly brash, flamboyant, and borderline creepy (and not just due to the killing).
As the Manga goes on, she becomes a little more fleshed out, sheâs still absolutely unhinged, but she seems to have more impulse control by the time sheâs working with Othello.
In those later chapters, sheâs still incredibly self-centered as well, and seems to lack empathy for most others.
Itâs canon that Grelle took her own life, itâs hasnât been quite explicit *why*, but itâs clear that she has a lot of existing mental health issues (healthy people donât assist in murders or otherwise act in the way she did), so she already was in a bad place. Donât get me wrong, Grelle is a BAD person, but itâs also clear that she was incredibly unstable at the time the Red Butler arc took place. Itâs likely seeing Ann and realizing âother women feel the pain that I doâ, made her feel like her violent tendencies were justified.
Im universe, it seems like whatever happened whenever she went missing for a couple dozen chapters, she had time for personal growth. She still has all the traits she was introduced with: violent, flirty, ext- but she is also more than that.
