Here's some purslane flowers and a seed pods up close. I think it's really cool how the seed pods open up like the lid on a cookie jar!
Purslane
Scientific name ā Portulaca oleracea
Purslane is hot weather succulent that grows along the ground but grows vertically when there is a lot of competition or shade. It branches profusely where there is open sun to form a thick mat covering the ground. The stems and leaves are succulent which means they are fleshy and thickened to absorb and hold water. The leaves themselves have rounded or flattened tips. The leaves are green and can have a reddish tint.
It has small yellow flowers that open only in sunlight. Small black seeds grow out of little seed pods that the top pops off leaving a little cup containing the seeds.
Purslane is loaded with nutrients including vitamins A, C, E, magnesium calcium, iron, phosphorous, potassium, and omega 3s and antioxidants such as glutathione. The leaves and stems are edible and keep tasting good long throughout the season. Because of the nature of the plant and its water storing capabilities, it remains flexible longer than others. Purslane can be eaten raw, cooked, or pickled. I like to just eat it when Iām out in the garden or to pick some to put on sandwiches. Has a slight lemony flavour.
Check out this video with lots more info about purslane!

I started this channel early in 2020 when there was a lot of chaos, stress, and despair in the world. I hoped to add some positivity to the world at the same time as encouraging what I think are some healthy activities.
I have always gotten a lot of joy from gardening and learning about edible and medicinal plants. I looked for information specific to my area and found lot of foraging channels on YouTube, but they weren't quite what I was looking for. I had also thought about trying to to put together a book about the plants that I am learning about, but I though a video format would be the best way to share the information.
I hope that these videos are interesting and that people learn something from them and that I can help people to become more interested in growing their own food and developing a better appreciation for nature around us!
