Time for a change...
It is said that every decade, an organization goes through a major developmental process that comes about in the form of leadership transition, realignment of vision and purpose, staff and members turn-overโฆ including name change. This has been true for our choir from its inception as โPro Cantuโ in 1997 to where we are today.
Within the last 26 years, the choir has seen over 500 membership turnover with an ever widening demographic of participants, in terms of location, background and age groups. What began as a choir for high school students in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town expanded its reach of membership into the City Bowl and all the way to the Deep South. This organic movement of growth was accompanied by the maturation of the choir membership. Teenagers who remained in the choir grew up, university students and young (and not-so-young) professionals joined, and increasingly the choir was filled with voices of all ages.
We believe that this broadening of membership brings a richness to our music and community and hence, in our last AGM in May we unanimously voted to change our name to reflect this. As we are no longer uniformly โYouthsโ, we want to make room for more people to join the choir who in the past, may have been held back by the name. These are exciting times, one that is making space for a much more diverse representation of professional backgrounds as well as the possibilities of an even more robust musical contribution from the various vocal ranges contributed by the varying age groups.
We are so pleased to announce to you that from the 1st of July 2023 onward, the choir will be known as CAPE TOWN CAMERATA. Our goal is to continue creating space for people to make music at the highest standard.
