Twas The Night Before!
'Twas the night before harvest, and all through the farm,
Not a tractor was stirring, no machinery alarm.
The combines were parked by the silos with care,
In hopes that the rain soon would leave the air.
The farmers were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of crops danced in their heads.
And Mama in her boots, and I in my cap,
Had just settled down for a well-deserved nap.
When out on the field there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters, and threw up the sash.
The moon on the ground of the freshly plowed soil
Gave the luster of midday to the freshly-tilled spoil.
When what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a big red tractor, with a plow in the rear!
With a farmer so lively, so skilled and so spry,
I knew in a moment it must be nearby.
More rapid than deer, his equipment they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name:
"Now, John! Now, Case! Now, Massey and New Holland!
On, Claas! On, Kubota! On, Fendt and McCormick!
To the top of the barn! To the top of the silo!
Now plow away! Plow away! Plow away, go!"
As dry leaves that before the wild wind fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.
So up to the barn-top the tractors they flew,
With a trailer of hay, and a cultivator too.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The stomping and snorting of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney, the farmer came with a bound.
He was dressed all in denim, from his boots to his hat,
His clothes were all dusty, with straw and with that.
A bundle of seeds he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a pro, just back from the track.
His eyes—how they twinkled! His smile, how it shone!
His cheeks were like apples, his nose a bright tone.
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled up the silos, then turned with a jerk.
He sprang to his tractor, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the sound of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, as he drove out of sight,
"Happy farming to all, and to all a good night!"
