We can get as technical as we want when it comes to talking about color temperature, but that doesn't exactly explain WHY we would shoot with a particular time of day in mind. So let's cover the hows AND the whys, and develop a slightly different way of thinking about this, to better visualise and implement the desired visual language of the image/scene/film you're shooting.

New video! And we're looking at why we would use Broad lighting over the popular Upstage (or Short) lighting pattern, as well as discussing why "cinematic" isn't just a look - it's story, feeling and a cohesion of those elements. I hope you enjoy it!

In the New Year, I'll be attempting to streamline some of the video creation process in the Lighting for Cinema series. This won't mean a dip in quality, or loss of information given; what it may mean is a more hands-on approach to the presentation of the scripts I've written.

Being a ghostly narrator means I need to do way more in the edit to fill in gaps, keep up pacing and remove any instances of my mouth making funny sounds whilst talking šŸ¤£. This is how the timeline looked for Parts 1-3 of Back Light - not quite the complexity of a Hollywood picture, but being primarily a team of 1 person, I plan, shoot, write, voice record and edit (not to mention posting to platforms and writing descriptions) - and it's a lot of work for a 21 minute video.

Since I'm not in a position to hire anyone else (yet), I've racked my brains and found a (very obvious) solution to speed things up a little and to allow me to keep ahead with the series. You won't see a change in the next video, but possibly the one after that! ;)

New video out now! - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b50BU... - looking at why we would use a hair light - and a kicker!

Once New Year rolls around, I'll be attempting to adjust my workflow to make each topic in this series a bit shorter in length, so that we can stick to a single episode for an individual topic. I'll still be packing in as much info as I have been, we just hopefully won't end up with a bazillion parts for a single topic!!

Happy Christmas/Happy Holidays!! :)

The latest episode of Lighting for Cinema A - Z is out now! - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqDh7... - and we're looking at back light, with Part 1 focusing on rim light in particular - how it can help to emphasise and carry the moods and feelings you want to represent in your images. I hope you're all well! :)

Not a usual post from me, I usually just do whatever I want haha, but Iā€™m doing some research as I go with this series so any input is valuable! šŸ˜€
