“Plagal Soul” - a deep study in one of the most beautiful chord changes in music. Just two chords, but they conjure so much emotion and pull on those heart strings!
We look at a few interesting ways to approach chord voicings while we lay down a soul, r’n’b flavoured groove.
Then we navigate melodic soloing over the changes using some essential elements; triads, arpeggios, as well as the major pentatonic and melodic minor scales!

A jam-packed lesson in what I call “cadence playing”. These changes will appear in almost every song at some point, so to have a few go-to approaches will be highly valuable and applicable.

Tune in for the live premier at 5pm GMT this Saturday!

HUUUUUUUGE lesson coming this weekend! The deepest yet to hit this channel for sure. Covering the absolute essentials of key theory, harmony and composition as we learn a hauntingly beautiful chord melody. We'll be applying a nice mixture of familiar shapes, as well as some fresh and exciting new options and voice-leading chordal manoeuvres.. all while remaining accessible to learn!

The accompanying lesson materials are absolutely gigantic, (as should be expected with a lesson of this kind!)
Anyway, I hope you can tell that I’m equal parts excited and proud of this one, so please do tune in at 4pm GMT this weekend! 🙏🏻🧡

This Saturday we go acoustic and learn one of my all time favourite instrumental pieces to play. Often the first thing I rattle through whenever I pick up a nice acoustic guitar and drop the bass string down to D.

Building a repertoire of songs you can perform from memory and play as a solo musician is something I massively recommend, and this transatlantic folk/bluegrass tune is a stunningly beautiful example of that.

Join me at 5pm GMT this Saturday!

This is an incredibly hard post to write..

My little soulmate; Louis the cat, sadly passed away just over a week ago. He was my boy.. my World. I was 23 years old when I picked him out of a litter of kittens at 10 weeks of age, and for the 16 years since then, we’ve been side by side, day in/day out.

It still doesn’t feel real, and I’m struggling to come to terms with it. My heart is broken, my head is in a dense fog and I feel a colossal emptiness.
Anyone who has formed a special bond with a beautiful animal will understand this feeling I’m sure.. it really is profound. I’m told that immense grief is the price that you pay for loving so deeply.. maybe that’s a comfort, but nothing about this feels comfortable right now.

Louis brought so much joy and light into my life, and he did it effortlessly and unconditionally. I appreciated every single day with him and he has left me with a wealth of beautiful memories that I hope to find comfort in once this initial period of intense pain wears down.

During this period, I’m taking some time away from private teaching, and my YouTube videos will be uploaded bi-weekly instead of weekly. I’m not going anywhere, but I do need the space to reflect and re-energise. I will come back stronger, you have my word on that.. and I will do it to honour my little boy.

For those of you who already know about this and have reached out to show your support, I appreciate it so greatly.. your kindness is humbling and I genuinely cherish it.. thank you so much.

Yours sincerely,
Alex x

6pm This Saturday.. we continue on with a focus on blues rhythm playing. This time turning our attention to the classic T-Bone Walker tune “Stormy Monday”.
A tasteful tweak on the regular 12 bar blues progression, with many, many chordal options. We round them all up and explore them in depth over the course of our 25 minute long deep dive into this Blues standard.

Classy chord voicings, extensions, alterations, substitutions, movements and essential chordal riffs.. this video has something for all levels!

We will explore how to solo over these changes in a follow up video, so do make sure to hit the subscribe button to stay up to date with all of my videos! 👌🏻😎

See you Saturday folks!

P.S: You can now become a channel “member” for just £4.99 a month, if you’d like to support the work I do here 🙏🏻🧡

Whether you consider yourself a Rhythm or lead player is irrelevant.. this stuff is non-negotiable and essential!

From Keith Richards and Billy Gibbons, to John Lennon and David Gilmour, we cover a ton of blues and rock n’ roll related territory in this one!

Join me, guitar in hand, at the later time of 7pm BST this Saturday for the live premier!

For the first time in over a year, I’m taking a week off from posting a public lesson up on YouTube. *For my Patreon members, there’ll still be something exciting to work on coming your way this Saturday.

I’m currently working hard coming up with some really exciting, and different studies.. recording a new backing track daily and finding inspiration in new sounds. So watch this space, because after this week off, we’ll be back twice as strong as before for #SeasonTwo 💪🏼😎

Thanks for all of your kind words and encouragement over the past year.. it means the World to me and I can’t wait to see what this next year brings! See you all next week! 🧡

Tomorrow! The 1st entry in a new series on "Must-Know Jazz Standards". I'll likely do one of these per month or so, (with the usual content in-between of course.. blues, country, jazz, Americana etc).
The purpose of these videos will be to show you how to play the melody and chords for some of the essential jazz standards. I'll show you some of my preferred options regarding keys, chord changes and voicings. As always, full lesson materials will be available for each episode.

P.S: on this occasion the lesson won't be a live premier as I'm travelling for a gig this weekend. But please do make sure to leave a comment, drop a like and share with any like-minded guitar playing friends! 🙏🏻🧡
