The Doughboy Foundation worked with the US WWI Centennial Commission to make the National WWI Memorial in Washington, DC a reality. The project began in 2014. An international design competition was held in 2015, with the design selection taking place in 2016. After $50 Million in fundraising, construction commenced in 2020. The Memorial opened to the public in 2021. The Doughboy Foundation will continue its mission of stewardship for the Memorial and the remembrance of all those who served and sacrificed in WWI.This includes:
- The daily sounding of Taps at the Memorial
- Access to the Memorial via mobile apps
- Events to encourage learning about WWI
The Doughboy Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization incorporated in the District of Columbia in 2013 under the name of the "United States Foundation for the Commemoration of the World Wars." Project collaborators include the Commission of Fine Arts, the National Capital Planning Commission, and the National Park Service.
